Americorps and the Washington Conservation Corps

I like to apologize if did not properly categorize this post as I am no parent but as the most discussion for the Americorps program happens here and I figured I might as well ask here since I couldn’t locate a topical category. So I want to take a gap year and volunteer for Americorps in the NCCC division specifically in the Washington Conservation Corps. I ran into a conflict in my understanding of how the Americorps system works when I first found the Washington Conservation corps an affiliate of Americorps… As I understand Americorps will assign me to a location and I have no decision in that matter yet if I understand correctly the Washington Conservation Corps is a Americas program that requires an application… Do I need to be a Americorps member to apply and if I am an Americorps member will that application (if accepted) decide my placement rather than the Americorps own placement?

Since your goal is to get into The Washington Conservation Corps–why don’t you just call and talk to the folks there directly about opportunities that would be available to you. They are the folks who can answer your question.

This is totally wrong. S is doing a year with Americorps now. He applied through them to places he was interested in. He had several places that wanted interviews. He did SKYPE or phone interviews with them and picked from several offers. It seemed to be pretty much like getting a job.
