Amherst Class of 2010

I noticed there was a thread like this on other forums, so I figured I should start one here.

Basically, if we’re going to go to Amherst in the fall, we probably aren’t going to know that many people when we get there, right? (I got lucky 'cause my close friend is also going so I know at least one person.) I thought it would be cool if we got to know some classmates before we get there so we feel a little more comfortable making the transition (and so we can say, “Oh my God! It’s that guy/girl from online!” and feel like we met a celebrity).

Okay, I’ll start…

Hi, I’m Gina. I decided to go to Amherst as an Undecided. I’m planning on taking Spanish in college to finally learn the basics. I also plan on playing soccer (intramural) because I miss it so much and I haven’t played since middle school. I love art and creative writing and music (my trinity of cool things) but even though that’s so humanities-oriented, I still enjoy physics and calculus (partly 'cause my teachers rock).

I’m Chilean(-American), so if there are any other Chileans out there, or Latinos in general, “Hi!!!” I really hope I can meet more because the majority of my high school was Italian and there was only one other Hispanic in the classes I took.

Personality-wise, I’m a romantic, rather shy at first, loyal, hard-working. I also love laughing and listening to melancholy songs (and music in general).

Plans for college? Learning a martial art (I’ve been doing cardio kickboxing for the past 4 years), continuing piano lessons, picking up Japanese (if at all possible), playing soccer, expanding my mind without drugs hehe

Plans for the end of school? Chillin with my friends and watching the World Cup!!!

If you want to know more about me, check out my myspace at http://www.myspace.com/his_wizard_eyes

Now it’s your turn! Introduce yourself, and maybe we can all get to know each other a little before we get to Amherst. =)

Hi, I’m Dean.

I’m a Korean-American, although I have been in US just over five years.
I went in undecided as well, and currently have no idea as to what I will do.
I’m counting on my meeting with the counselors, because I really, really,
really do not have any idea what I am going to do for the rest of my life.

I used to work in an old artbook store, so I do have some knowledge in art, but art is definitely not my favorite. As for creative writing, the English language in general just makes me shudder, thanks to my English teacher who reminds me of esoteric professors in movies. So lets get past that. I’m really into music, especially acappella music. In fact, just yesterday our high school’s acappella group won the International Championship of High school A cappella competition. Best senior memory ever. I definitely plan to continue on with music, if not just one acappella group. Fun stuff. I also do a lot of acting, but I can’t find anything about acting and amherst together.

I know whereever I go there would be Asians(Asians are supposed to be minorities too…) But most of my close friends are whites or latinos…
one of my close friend’s full name is
Vanessa Merari Pabon Garcia Cornardo Torres Rodriguez Santiago Vargas Santos.
I can say that really fast, so if you ever see me at Amherst make sure to tell me to say that.

I’ve never had a chance to join a sport because of choir, but I am definitely towards the athletic side. I release all my physical wants in school gym, which is turning to be a problem since now I’m just taking health. I plan to do some sports, maybe even varsity(probably not, my mom would kill me).

I am really loud, I mean volume-wise, so I tend to say, unintendedly, inappropriate things in serious situations. Not cussing, but just funny for everyone else but a bringer of trouble for me. So if you’re around me, you’ll
have a lot of chances to laugh. I supposedly have an amazing ability to be funny while not intending to be so.

I’m not a really big party guy, although i enjoy them. For some reasons I am looking more forward to the party scene, probably because of senioritis.
Senioritis blows, especially when amherst requires your final transcript.
Yech.

Congratulations, Gina. You will love Amherst!! My son, a student at Amherst is a martial artist (Kung Fu/kickboxing) who is planning on starting a mixed martial arts club at Amherst. I’m sure he’ll be happy to hear about you (we are Latino as well).

Hi, I’m Robyn, and I’m from Long Island, New York, but I am not the typical “Jewish American princess.” I’m kind of eccentric and eclectic, I like all types of music - metal, punk, industrial, classical, 90’s dance hall, 80’s cheese, different kinds of pop, etc.

I’m an English / Psych major. I love the humanities - a fuzzie, so NOT a techie (I can’t do math to save my life!) I love writing, that’s what I want to do with my life besides becoming a psychologist. I read about 50 books a year - any type of books, actually. I usually read novels or historical fiction. I love to sing but have only been since junior year. I am really into pop culture and any kind trivia. I want to join Amherst Student Bowl team, or whatever it’s called. I am also a HUGE film buff and would love to be a critic some day.

I have a really close-knit group of nerdy-cool friends, and I hope to find the same people here. I am a very loyal person, and would do anything for the people I love. I have a strange affinity for red-heads, btw, and two of my best friends are ginger. I am TOTALLY OBSESSED with Harry Potter (books, not movies) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I haven’t had TV or the internet until I recently moves in with my cousin after my dad had a stroke two weeks ago, but I do have a lot of favorite shows from whenever I’ve gone to other people’s houses.

Just to warn y’all - I am NOT athletic or very preppy, as the usual Amherst student is purported to be. I am not a partier - I get my kicks from good conversations or hanging out watching a movie over the weekend.

When I first meet people I tend to be shy, but when I open up, watch out! I hope to meet a lot of great people at Amherst, and I am really excited for the end of August!

Hi, I’m Sharon, who was (expectedly) dork-ely excited when Gina mentioned that she had started this thread. Naturally, I joined as quick as I could to meet as many future classmates as humanly possible ^_^

I am a Korean-American from New Jersey who trembles at the thought of surviving even a week without kimchi (a spicy Korean dish-thing that makes my mouth water…), although I’ve lived in the US all my life.

Other than that major weakness, I see no problem with my plan to awe the world with amazing writing abilities akin to the plot-goddess J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter ROCKS!!! <3)…in my dreams, of course. I do enjoy writing, though I seem to be forever in a rut and therefore turn to reading more often than not. Other than becoming a successful novelist, I don’t really have any future plans, which I’m hoping that Amherst’s profs and advisors will help me with.

Up until a while ago, all I could see for me was an English major. Now I’m not so sure, and I’m more open to different possibilities (admittedly all in the humanities area, though…). Math and science aren’t my strong areas - though my favorite teacher is my Physics teacher, and my Calc teacher is the coolest, funniest, TALLEST teacher I’ve ever met. I may take Korean language and also Latin (yes, it’s dead…but I like it! XD) at Amherst, and I’m hoping to improve whatever little skills I have in both. Also, I am interested in learning about Religion and Philosophy, if only for the reason to increase my woefully inadequate knowledge about each subject. - And I want to write a book with religious and philosophical themes, which is impetus enough for me ^^

I would like to join Amherst’s Anime Club, slither into whatever Creative Writing things are going around (do they have a club?), get off my lazy butt and take advantage of the lovely gyms, and finally, finally get an Amherst sweater~

I’d rather not drink, and WOULD rather watch a movie or visit Boston or ogle martial arts guys (everyone, look up Team Ryoko…). I’m very naive and shy and tend to be quiet at first, though I open up after a bit. :)

Right now, I’m enjoying senioritis…though reality is bound to come knocking sometime soon. Maybe tomorrow.

I hope to meet you all in August!

Using my dad’s account to say hi…I’m not normally on this thing.

Hey, my name’s Andrew. I’m a Korean American from So-Cal. I’ll listen to pretty much anything except techno and country. I too am wondering what the heck I’m going to do without Kimchi…oh dear God. And I’m a bit worried about the weather, but excited for snow! (I havn’t seen much snow).

I’m probably going to major up in history. I love history. I live and breathe the stuff. :] Guns, Germs, and Steel is my favorite book right now. I’m real into the whole Korean history scene too. I can’t get enough of the Three Kingdoms Period. Math and science are the devil btw. Haha, I’m actually kind of into the whole eviro stuff, so it’ll be cool if I can find some classes at Amherst. I also plan on taking Korean, but they don’t offer it over at Amherst, so I figure I’ll hop on over to UMASS for that. I’m also thinking about taking up Latin and maybe Swahili for the hell of it.

I’m not crazy sportsy but I hope to do something intermural over at Amherst. Not sure what yet though. I heard a lot of stuff about crew though, so I don’t think I’ll be doing that.

Mainly I hope to meet a lot of new people. That’s about it. Cheers.

http://www.myspace.com/gubookjanggoon

sorry to infringe on your lovely post, I just had a couple things to say to Andrew

Korean is only offered at Smith, 45 minute bus ride, kinda long, best bet is to find someone with a car. I’ll be driving over to Smith for introductory Korean actually next Fall, I’ll let you know how it is.

And being from NY, and moving up MA, lemme tell ya you’ll get sick of the snow very quickly ;).

Haha, thanks for the correction. Yea, I’d really appreciate it if gave us the lowdown on Korean over at Smith. :]

Interesting how out of five posters three are Korean.
And coincidentally enough, my last name is Chung as well (gasp)
I think I can live without Kimchi, however.

Oh, but there is good news!
I just saved a bunch of money on my car ins-- (punches)
cough

there is a Korean restaurant called 고향 not too far away.
My mom and I were so psyched about it when we first saw it, because
I figured there won’t be anything like that in a town like Amherst(or Hadley, for that matter)… Inside, the restaurant walls are filled with Korean students’
marks and graffitti since like 92. I wanted to eat there when I visited, but they won’t open until late on Mondays. So if you ever have a dire need for Kimchi, that’s the place to be.

Say_Kimchi, which part of New Jersey are you from? Two Koreans from the same state onboard in a class of 400+. (I am, too). Strange.

And yes, snow gets old. And yes, you’ll be cold.

Which “Chung” clan do you belong to?
What is your Korean name?

hey thought i’d keep up the tradition bc i’m korean too but i have no sense of any korean culture whatsoever and i know nothing about it…yeah and i suck at talking about myself

be my friend… http://www.myspace.com/rtichokart

Haeju Chung over here.

Dongrae Chung Clan over here…

there are more than TWO CHUNGS!?

Hey all :)

My name is Alex, I am from San Diego, and I am really excited about going to Amherst next year  I am a Jewish Techie/Nerd - I am going to be majoring in Economics while taking Math and Spanish Literature. My mother is Chilean (so hi Gina!) and that was my first language. I am going to be on the Sailing Team (coolest sport ever!). I went to the Amherst, one-day open house and really liked the campus and town. One of the things I really liked about my Senior class was the ability for my friends and I to embark on spontaneous, intellectually stimulating discussions about life, something that I hope to continue into college :stuck_out_tongue: I like alot of 80’s music and independant stuff, but am pretty much open to anything (I usually add ‘except country’ here but i DO like Johnny Cash). I am also into offensive, disrespectful humor, a la Family Guy :P

As I am fervently opposed to myspace, I have no link to provide, but I will check this thread to get to, hopefully, get to know ya’ll :)

-Alex

Hello! I’m Dean (yet another Dean). I’m an international student from Nigeria. I like the concept of a liberal arts education and Amherst is definitely the place for me. I think that Amherst is great. I was shocked when I got the decision (I’m still in shock). I will probably major in one of the sciences and play soccer at some level (intramural, most likely). I am also considering taking piano lessons if such opportunities will be available.

Apart from the sciences, I also love to write and I am also thinking of taking some courses in the classics and improving my proficiency in French. I may also take some econ classes. Not quite sure what I want to do with my life yet. But, I keep having this day dream where I see myself with a big smile on my face shaking some old guy’s hand as he hands me the Nobel prize for finding the cure of AIDS (it just a thought).

What kind of person am I? Hard to say. I like to think of myself as a loyal friend. I’m kinda reticent when I meet someone for the first time but when we become friends, I morph into a talktative. That kind of behaviour has its drawbacks but it is my general mode of life. Unlike most people from this side of the Atlantic, I believe that nothing is impossible if you work hard enough. I like most forms of music but rock is my favourite. Talking about myself IS my major weakness. So…I’ve run out of points.

I guess that is all. I’m looking forward to seeing you all in the fall. So, take care.

Hey everyone, I’m Eric from New York. And no, I’m not Korean, but I am Jewish. I am undecided on my major, but am possibly interested in something like political science. I will probably take advantage of the open curriculum my first year and take courses in a wide variety of areas, including science, english, and the social sciences.

I plan on getting involved in many activities, including possibly writing for the newspaper, service work in the community, and intramural sports to stay active and have fun. I don’t have myspace. I listen to mostly classic rock, although I try to keep my mind open. I can’t really analyze my own personality, but you guys can figure it out when you get to know me. I look forward to seeing everybody and meeting you in the fall (in under 4 months).

Hi everyone out there, here’s an intel from Vietnam speaking to ye:)

Okay, so my name is Linh, pretty easy to pronounce - just say Ling and you’ll be fine. Incidentally, my screenname is the Chinese version of my name. I’m studying Chinese at HS and would love to convert your polysyllabic names into Pinyin for you, but it involves lots of rules I don’t even know where to read about:D

I’m totally thrilled to get accepted. My Amherst supp essay was finished at 5 AM, Dec 31, 2005, yeah I’m that kind of procrastinator, so beats me why I was accepted. Now Amherst is my first choice - all this Open Curriculum that I’m dying for, the undergrad focus, the close-knit community and all that stuff. I really just can’t wait to fly over and start taking all the courses I ever wanna take. Btw, I’m crazy passionate about the Cognitive Sciences, so I’ll major in Psy at Amherst and take a bunch of Linguistics courses over at UMass.

Personally, I think I’m a big nerd (or geek, whichever you prefer). I’m alternately an introvert and an extrovert, but overall I’d say introvert. I enjoy both hanging out with my pals and just lying staring at the ceiling thinking things over. You kinda just wind up with a balance;) I’m very laid-back, so much so that I don’t give a **** about my GPA; just let it take care of itself, and it did:D I’m so so so quirky; right now I can’t list all my stp and not-so-stp quirks, but in the end we’ll all get to know;) My taste of music is eclectic; don’t laugh if I tell ya I enjoy Beethoven, The Beatles and Simple Plan:D My interests are all over the place so I’ll be taking lots of unrelated (prolly) classes and get to meet all of ya b4 long:) Until then, I’ll spend the rest of senior year procrastinating with you here:p

Hi Eric, yay for New York Jews! Where are you from? I am from East Meadow, on Long Island.

And hi to Linh, as well! I am going to major in Psych (along with English) so I am sure we will get to know each other. I am a big nerd too, so we’ll probably get along pretty well, haha.

Robyn, I’m from Manhattan.

Haha, that’s cool. Not too far away from where I am, lol. It’s funny, I’m almost sort of “collecting” people from the area because it’s going to be so wierd for me to be away from New Yorkers. I don’t know what to expect! So far I have only actually met one other person from New York and know of another three who are supposed to be going, but none of them are Jewish. Alas, I suppose that’s what you get when you elect to go to a private New England college, instead of say, Hofstra, NYU, or a SUNY/CUNY.
