Amsterdam-

My D just had her 2nd apartment cancel on her through Arbnb. It is for late June and now there is not a lot of availability on Arbnb and what is available is expensive. She is also feeling burned by them and is nervous about booking something else and getting another cancellation at even a later date. Any suggestions for lower priced hotel?

Budget?

My daughter stayed at the Prinsengracht Hotel in the Garden House with friends as a college student. She was satisfied with the accommodations.

Thanks MaterS- that might be an option. It’s $220 which is more than they want to spend but they might need to go around that.
The apartment was in the Jordaan and $150.
They aren’t there for many days so want to be fairly central.

If there is no cancellation penalty, they might want to reserve, just to have a place. Summer is busy with tourists in Europe.

My S and his friend stayed at a hostel, which I think had private rooms. It was the Flying Pig near the Vondelpark, I think. My D has stayed in some very nice hostels all around the world…most would not be considered “party hostels” and did have private rooms for travelers who want to avoid the dorms.

I stayed in the Sir Albert Hotel and quite liked it. It’s downtown and an easy walk to the Museum district. I just looked on one of the hotel booking sites and they are showing mid-week availability there in late June for $170 to $225 depending on how big a room you want. Weekends are probably pricier and possibly sold out.

My friend’s daughter travelled to Amsterdam last summer with a group of girls. I believe they stayed at a hotel called the Golden Tulip. My recollection is that she said it was very reasonable, clean and in a central location. I think the rooms vary and their only complaint was that one group of girls ended up with a large room and the other 2 with a very small room – so research and a prior request for location of your room would be advisable.

@mom60 - That is just horrible. I feel bad for the girls and I often wonder if someone has made a better offer to the renter…

Lately I enjoy going directly to google maps and instead of entering an address, I enter Amsterdam hotels and then it will let you alter the dates. I think it is fun and informative to see where the hotels are located and the prices being offered. If you make the map a bit bigger, you usually can get smaller hotels and hostels to show up. Many times, you will be offered the direct websites.

Good luck to your D.

Amsterdam is really quite small. It is quite easy to walk half of it, and doing so is charming.

Last time we stayed at the Doubletree near the train station. Super convenient in terms of transportation options, which we used to travel both in Amsterdam and nearby towns.

I think the person found some who would pay her more. The apartment was $440 for 3 nights. They aren’t going to come anywhere close to that. I’ve offered them a free night if they pick somewhere I can use my credit card points. My D was ready to ditch Amsterdam but I had to remind her that their flights home were out of Amsterdam.
Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll pass them on. One issue is that they really don’t want to be spending a lot of time on the bus or tram. Also I don’t think they would enjoy being on a loud square. When my H and I went we rented a great apartment near the Artis but it’s not available. I loved the Plantage area because you could walk to everything but we came back to our peaceful apartment each night.

@mom60 Take a look at www.booking.com now I just did a quick search and a few came up:

This hostel, looks decent:
Stayokay Amsterdam Stadsdoelen

Also, try the Museum Quarter, you can usually find a good deal around there if you check regularly.

It has been several years and it was literally the smallest room I’ve ever stayed in but a good location, spotless and included a continental breakfast. The Owl -easy walk to just about everything and easy access to the airport on public bus. Right near the Leidseplain and the Marriott Hotel

They found something. Her travel companion was able to find them a place. My D can’t recall the name but she said the location is good and it includes breakfast. They are going to have to come up with an additional hundred dollars each. Room is over $200 a night. By far the most expensive place on their trip by a lot. I’ll post the name once I get it. Once again thank you for your help.
