An A- or B+ in A Regular Class

will getting an A- or B+ decrease your chances into getting a great (aka Top 50) school? i got one A-, and one B+ in 9th Grade in two regular classes. These two regular classes do have a corresponding honors class with it.

So will it hurt me? will it hurt me a lot?

Freshman year? No. Junior year? A little, but other classes better be good. Top 50s don’t care that you get like 2 Bs in regular classes, but once you hit top 20 yeah they will. That being said, take rigorous courseload.

I kind of leaning towards Top 20 schools. So, if I get a few A- or B+ in regular classes, when there is a honors class for that class, during freshman year, it would hurt me for the top 20?

^If you take a very rigorous courseload and do well from now on, it won’t hurt you. Colleges are very forgiving of students who turn around.

what if y’all don’t got the hardest courseload?

<what if=“” y’all=“” don’t=“” got=“” the=“” hardest=“” courseload?=“”> Only the shoot-to-the-top schools care about this. If you get very demanding instead of most rigorous it’ll be good enough for top 50. But not top 20.</what>

I agree with the posters above. Getting a B+ (especially in junior year) will hurt for a top 10 college. Obviously, worse if it’s a full year grade rather than just one quarter grade or one trimester grade.

A- NO
B+ Maybe ?
Are we talking Final Grades Here? Or quarter/semester?

Well how would it affect you for semester? Then final?

I disagree w/DMOC that getting a B+ in Junior year will be significant in one’s admission to a top ten school. Obviously a stupendous GPA is essential. But at that level of selectivity and with holistic admissions, the difference between a 4.0 and a 3.95 is inconsequential. The admitees are chosen because they stand out – not because one had a 4.0 and another had a 3.95.

I had a handful of Bs (in various extremely rigorous courses in my competitive HS) – including in Hon Chemistry. I even put down “Chemistry” as my intended major. Didn’t hurt me a lick. I applied to Ivies and top engineering schools. All accepted me, I matriculated at an HYP.
