An Adverse Revelation.

After being a rather tacit bystander for about a month on this site, I soon came to the realization that I’ve probably made the biggest mistake of my life. I already applied to some really competitive schools, schools that everyone, the ostensible cream of the crop, is applying too - but enough of my ranting. I just wanted to know if my money spent on applications and scores wasn’t a complete waste, and whether or not I stand any chance with respect to college admission.

I’m first generation, no one else in my family has gone to college. Both my parents are immigrants. My first languish is a Slavic Language. I didn’t learn English until kindergarten-1st grade.

I attend public school.

Rank: 5/135
ACT: 27 (29 E, 29 M, 27 R, 24 S) Essay 12/12

As far as I’m concerned, I have a really ambitious list and I’m suprised my GC allowed me to apply to those schools. She said, “test scores aren’t everything.”

Schools: Columbia, Yale, Penn, Dartmouth, Bowdoin, Middlebury, Northwestern, NYU, SUNY Binghamton.

I didn’t submit scores to Bowdoin. For Middlebury, I submitted three AP scores and a graded essay that I got a 98 on in Literature AP.

My College Essays are really well written and my teacher reccomendations are phenomenal.

I also have an alumni reccomendation at Yale, but I doubt that’ll help much.

So, any words of wisdom? I feel really crappy at the moment.

I think you have a fair shot, although the ACT and some SAT II scores seem a bit low. everything else puts you in the running for sure.

Are you kidding? So not all your academics are absolutely perfect. You have at least as good a shot as I do in all these schools! You don’t even think you’ll get into Northwestern? Come on!

But I think you do subconsciously know that…

Eh, your ACT score kills almost all of your chances. The rest is real strong.

I think he or she has a good chance at a little more than Northwestern. The Ivys are always unpredictable though.

Any other opinions?

I just picked out Northwestern…didn’t mean I thought he (she? So hard to tell–you should’ve posted more of your demographics!) would ONLY have a good shot at Northwestern. Matter of fact, all but the Ivies seem pretty good for you.

I don’t want to start a fight or anything, but I think he has a really good shot at all of his schools. Looking at my Fiske Guide to colleges, with the exception of Yale and Columbia, he falls within their ACT range. I mean, my friend was telling me how some kid from his school got accepted to Georgetown with an 1860.

Now, why would that start a fight?

I just like to handle the Ivies with kid gloves. I suppose it will depend on whether they like pickled’s ECs, teacher recs, and essays well enough, as far as Yale etc.
