An email from admissions about financial aid ED

A parent from my high school went to Northwestern, and when I asked her about early decision/financial aid issues, she kindly emailed Northwestern for me. This is their reply. So for those interested in early decision, but are worried about financial aid, Here are some details:

"Early Decision candidates are treated exactly like Regular Decision candidates for financial aid. The financial aid office determines a student’s need in the same way under both ED and RD. If a student and the family feel our ED aid offer is inadequate, they can appeal. If no adjustment is possible, they can request release from the ED agreement. The good news is that this happens very rarely. Our aid offers make it work for families.
The other scenario is the student who wants to compare aid offers. Some students apply for big merit awards–half or even full tuition. Those students should apply under RD.”

This is basic information that is available on their website that you can find with no effort whatsoever. I’m sure anyone who is considering ED has already looked into this, but thanks for posting again!
