An End,of Sorts, to the Harvard Murder Case

Ex-Harvard student Brittany Smith pled guilty to charges of being an accesory after the fact in the shooting death of a non-student in her Harvard dormitory. This story was hashed out thoroughly in the Harvard forum in 2009, but Smith’s was just convicted on September 30, 2011.

What a story! How could person with the ambition to study at Harvard find herself romantically attracted to a criminal? What I want to know now is, where are all the defenders of Smith’s former roomate Chenequa Campbell? We know now that Campbell’s a manipulative liar who hands are just as soiled as Smith’s in this whole sordid affair.

Smith’s involvement seemed much more direct than Campbell’s, I seem to remember. Do you have a reference to any info about what happened to Campbell herself?

The number of books on the subject of intelligent women choosing bad partners is staggering. bzzzz. thank you for playing. try again.

Some people who attended Harvard become criminals. (Think Unabomber for starters.)

Intelligence and good judgement don’t always go hand-in-hand.

Remember the craiglist killer? He was not at Harvard but was a smarty medical student at BU.

Remember Leopold and Loeb, who believed they were so intelligent, they could commit the perfect crime? They were intelligent, but were caught because a rare pair of glasses were left behind.

Also, not Harvard, the U of Chicago.

And Lyle Menendez, the Princeton guy who killed his parents.

In answer to my own question…

What I find especially mystifying are the legion of otherwise smart women who fall in love with and even marry convicted criminals who are in prison.

Maybe I could have been more popular with women and enjoyed a more active dating life back in the day if only I’d committed some violent felonies and been caught and convicted.

When I toured San Quintin, they had us lead around by prisoners. At the end of the tour, when we were dining in the prison, they told us the guides were all convicted murders. I guess they are considered “safe” because it their crimes were “crimes of passion.” They all seemed quite pleasant while leading us around. In the back of our minds, we were thinking about the waiver and release forms we had to sign to enter the place. Never was inclined to tour any other place of incarceration after that.

It does amaze me that incarcerated criminals (especially violent ones) are able to convince women to become engage to and marry them while the men are in prison. I have not heard of it going the other way, with women convincing men to marry them while they’re in prison, but perhaps it does as well. Must be some folks are extremely persuasive and some are very vulnerable.

In 1982, Harvard graduate student Joan Webster disappeared Thanksgiving weekend Sunday, and I don’t recall whether her body was ever found. Her wallet was found at Walden Pond next day, and her suitcase at the bus depot several months later. Foul play definitely occurred. She was a grad dorm RA too. Next month a grad student committed suicide in the dorm across the street, but occurences weren’t linked. Being at Harvard is no guarantee of safety.

Poetgrl tosses a thunderbolt from Mt. Olympus. Ouch.

Ellenmope, one Harvard Crimson story I read indicated that Ms. Campbell was, or is, living in Italy. Apparently she had spent much time studying there on exchange from Harvard. The story attributed some B.S. quote to her about the African-American ex-pat community in Italy being so understanding and supportive of her. What rot!!! If they knew her true background as a drug dealer and race propagandist I doubt they’d be so accepting. A reporter from BlackPlanet pointed out that she’s no victim. The true victim is dead and she had a hand in it.

Lake-- I hope you know I was just joking around.

Since my younger days, I have always been baffled by the attraction some of my friends felt to the most attrocious men. Personally, I always favored the “great guy,” and character mattered to me.

There must, however, be some sort of evolutionary advantage to the “jerk,” though, since many young women tend to favor this guy even when it makes no sense. Still, this woman’s involvement in this case points to a flawed character of her own. She was much more than an innocent bystander.

Go figure.

No offense taken, PG. Of course you’re right, there are lots of flawed characters out there who are attracted to others of similar proclivities. Then again, I’ve know poor innocent souls of both genders who’ve been emotionally bamboozled over a romantic attraction that they just can’t abandon.

And Amy somebody, the professor at a school in the south (Alabama?) who walked into a meeting of fellow professors and administrators and shot up the room. I’m not recalling her name.

Amy Bishop… had attended Northeastern and worked I believe, at Harvard prior to heading south.

Amy Bishop had a Harvard PhD in Genetics. Wikipedia maintains a list of famous H’s criminals. From Gina Grant to Jeffrey Skilling to Sinedu Tadesse.

The fascination with Harvard is really endless.

Incidentally, any news from the Amy Bishop prosecution? I wonder if they’re done with all the pre-trial stuff yet.

By the way xiggi, we’ve had our share of felons from Columbia, too. Sad to say. The undergrad drug dealers just made plea bargains in NYC. And there was the awful case of the Columbia ex-boyfriend whom murdered his former girl in her apartment near the campus, reputedly motivated by his manipulative “cougar” new girlfriend. Years ago the busar at Barnard College got busted for embezzling $$ to feed her Atlantic City gambling habit.
