okay so I was thinking the other day about the essay that I could write for SFS, and I thought that because I have a lot of experience with south america (in my EC’s and stuff) I could write mine about the second rise of leftist governments in south america. would that be a good topic for an international issue or is it too cliche??

As a spanish major, one of my essays focused on South American Culture and Immigration (a topic with which, I too have a lot of experience) - and it sounds to me like you have some interest in SA. Just make sure to tailor your essay to YOURSELF and not the leftist rise in and of itself… they want your goals, your opinions, your experiences and generally why the SFS will further those goals and change the way you think.

Maira, don’t underestimate this essay for GU. It’s the central aspect of your app and weighed quite heavily by admissions. Show some passion in your writing both for the leftist gov in South America AND the SFS. At that point, a “cliche” topic will not matter because your essay will show that element of a tight fit for you and GU that the rest of those Cliche essays wont have.

Good luck

I agree, your essay is not a research report, it’s also a personal statement. Keep that in mind as you write it.
