With the competition getting more and more fierce each coming year, i figured that i would try to find something that i can do to show that I have interests apart from the generic extracurriculars

I want to apply early to Brown University for the class of 2008. I know that there are many people who have the same if not better credentials than I do, so I am asking if an interest in playwriting will be an activity that the admissions board will consider to be “different”

At this point, I am working on having one of my acts being performed on stage at one of the high schools. It is not a definite yet, but if I sent in that tape as a supplement to my application, would it impress the board?

I know no one can say anything for certain, but any thoughts would be appreciated. =)

You need to show passion and a genuine interest. I also believe that a consistent EC is what really matters, rather thatn something you just did the summer before applications were due. I do not think any specific activity is more relevant than another. It does sounds like you are succeeding with the playwriting thing…That’s what counts… Good luck!

Playwrighting itself isn’t gonna do it; youz gonna do it.

Do something more with your interest in playwriting. If your school has a drama club, then show them your transcript and ask them if they’d be willing to put on a show of it. Show them that you can accomplish something with your playwriting interest.

I like to work on publications and digital art, in general. With this interest in mind, I joined my school newspaper staff my school yearbook staff. I’ve been a writer for the school newspaper for three years now, and hopefully, I will be editor next year. I’ve been on the yearbook staff for two years now, and currently, I’m the academics section head, and I’ve been offered the position of editor for my own class book. My interest of digital art comes into play especially with Yearbook; you have to tinker with layouts, design covers, and design little graphics to play here and there. And I also did something else over the summer, last year, with my interest in digital art. My friend started this t-shirt business where we designed our own logos to cast a positive light on Islam (we’re Muslim and given the violence in Lebanon at that time, we weren’t too happy about the negative spotlight that Islam was being put under). It didn’t amount to much, but we plan on working on it this summer again.

As with any extracurricular, you have to show the colleges that you have a genuine interest in the activity. It shouldn’t be obvious to them that you’re just doing it for the sake of college. And, I suspect they want a genuine interest because they want community involvement from you if they do accept you. They don’t want to accept you, and then find out that, over the course of your stay, you have not joined a single group, or whatever.

Thanks guys. I received an honorable mention for one of my one-act plays and I was planning on having the drama teacher see some of my stuff so that they can consider it for an opening for next years production.

After two years of work, I was named assistant editor of the Literary Art Journal and hopefully will become editor next year. Also, I was named Faculty Editor of the Yearbook this year and am working towards editor for my senior year. I have been doing a number of activities since my freshman year, but i figured that turning the playwriting from a hobby to an activity, it would only work to my benefit.

Thanks again

I think tux gave a good example. His app is gonna stand out in comparison to a kid who just put yearbook editor on his ec list. Also Brown gives you a lot of flexibility, so if you have an ec that you’re really passionate about than explain it in detail.
