an Identifying Sentence Error Question..

Hello,

Of all the writing questions I went through, this type of question has always felt uncomfortable even when answered correctly…
Need some good feedback from you guys…

from the identifying error section…

In her new play, Eurydice, playwright Sarah Ruhl has concentrated (not on) the passionate (journey of) Orpheus (to retrieve) his bride (but on) Eurydice’s descent into the underworld. (E)

Apparently the answer is (to retrieve) because it should be (retrieving), but here’s my question… Do we use the (retrieving) because it changes the logic of the sentence or just because it shouldn’t require an infinitive usage here?
This is apparently not a question of using gerunds vs infinitives, but when it comes to these questions, what is the essence that forces a shift from (to retrieve) to (retrieving) ??
It’s obviously a change from an infinitive usage to a participial form. But when ?? and when not??

Thanks…

actually the sentence should read:

… Orpheus’ retrieving his bride but on Eurydice’s descent into the underworld.

after the apostrophe Orpheus’ comes the gerund which is a noun as it is in

Eurydice’s descent. descent is a noun.

not on… but on… indicates the parallel Structure or construction.
