an insider's perspective on online universities

[I</a> teach for a diploma mill, er, I mean online university. AMA. : IAmA](<a href=“Reddit - Dive into anything”>Reddit - Dive into anything)

I didn’t know the top 3 online schools were that shady. I mean I’ve always been skeptical of schools like the University of Phoenix (OP works at different but similarly-advertised school), but I didn’t know standards were that atrocious.

A co-worker is going to one of these schools. It’s basically what we used to call “secretarial school” but she’s under the impression that when she graduates, she’ll have the equivalent of a university degree in Business Admin. Sadly, she’s also taking Stafford loans.

Wow! I was a teaching assistant when I was a SOPHOMORE in college at a OOS flagship U. I helped lead discussion sections and correct papers for a sociolgy course because I did so well in the course that the teacher asked me & I was flattered (I got credit but no pay & did no grading). I was really shocked at the poor quality of writing to the short answer questions and tried to provide constructive comments. I remember one student in particular who never was able to write ANY complete sentences and had difficulty conveying ideas in writing. I gently spoke to him one-on-one and asked him if he had taken any English composition courses. He bragged that he was a graduating SR and had been commended by his English teachers for his excellent writing! I gave up and never was a TA again–too scary and depressing to me to see the poor caliber of writing.

There are some great schools with on line degree programs.I believe there will be many more of these as people are so transient that they can take and complete courses where ever they may be.

People will have to separate the good from the bad.
