an "interesting" case

I’m a junior who just finished the school year, living in California, at one of the most competitive public schools in the country. During 10th grade, I took four regular academic classes and an honors class. I got 2 A’s and 3 B’s first semester, and 2 B’s and 3 A’s the second semester. The thing is, the classes I got A’s in during first semester were the ones I got B’s in during the second. As for this year, I took 2 AP classes and 1 honors class. The first semester I got straight A’s. The second one, I got 4 B’s and 1 C. So counting the AP and honors classes, my GPA would be 3.75.

My SAT score is 2100, I plan to take it again.
I just took SAT II tests, I don’t know what I got yet, I will take those again if necessary.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think colleges care about AP tests.

I’m a member of chess club all three years, moving gradually up the rankings as I got older, I was in Speech and Debate the first year and actually tied for first place in an elimination tournament. Then I was in Key Club sophomore year. I wasn’t in any of those this year because I wanted to concentrate on my studies. That worked for the first semester but then I got bored and depressed about things so I got bad grades.

So I’m interested in going to a U.C. and want to know what is the best one I have a good chance of getting into, and if there is anything I can do this summer to help. Perhaps try to go and win a chess tournament.

yeah win a chess tournament! anyways u.c? like Berkeley or something?

I seriously doubt I’m getting into Berkley, though that was originally my goal, Sigh. I think one needs to have a >4.0 GPA to have a very good chance at that, I would have gotten that too, if I got straight A’s again this semester. But I didn’t. I failed miserably. I don’t know exactly how hard it is to get into the other U.C.s though.

the U.C.s are very good about outlining their cut-off statistics, did you go visit any of them (with the admission information session) or get one of their brochures? i’d go get mine, but i think i’ve already tossed it by now (i’m OOS and realized i don’t really want to go to a UC). i’m pretty sure UCSD will be a match though, UCLA and Cal I don’t know, anything else will also obviously be a match/safety.

you should really go visit one of them and pick up the information packets if you haven’t already. they’re really helpful.
