And now for an important ranking – do you agree with your state’s winner?

Sometimes I think lists try too hard to be different. I also think some burger places try too hard to be bougie. I don’t want a burger I can barely fit in my mouth to take a bite. Honestly, I prefer a smash-like cheese burger with just ketchup, mustard and pickles. Once you mix in secret spices, throw a fried egg on top with some onion strings and Brie it’s less about the burger and more about the garnish.

Point well taken but I also admit for me, it IS about the garnish/condiments!

I live a condiment-free lifestyle, so for me, it’s all about the taste of the burger itself.

I’m not to embarrassed to admit I follow NJ food pages like best sandwiches, best pizza, best chicken Parmesan… So I’m pretty familiar with popular food!

I live in Orange County, CA. I have not been to my states pick but my mom regularly goes there whenever she goes to UCLA basketball games.

I used to when I read the Star-Ledger before it disappeared; loved Pete Genovese’s food adventures and columns. But I don’t recall reading about this particular place.

What a bust. DH and I decided to stop off in Falmouth on our way back from Portland today to try the touted burger at Harmon’s Lunch (as our fridge is completely empty in advance of closing down the cabin tomorrow and heading back to AZ). However, we should not have relied on the description in the article* that mentions dining in:

Anyone who dines in at Harmon’s Lunch can clearly see a sign behind the counter that says, “This is not Burger King. You don’t get it your way.”

Turns out, since Covid, Harmon’s is serving from an outdoor walk-up window only, and I don’t do take-out, so it may have been the best burger in the state, but we passed. Harmon’s took “hole-in-the-wall” too literally for me.

*The article is dated 10/15/25 so I didn’t think to fact check the service. My bad.

On another note, I concur that Miller’s in Dearborn, MI has outstanding pub fare. I spent way too much time there in the 80’s schmoozing with Ford folks. Glad to see it still makes a “best” list.

Too bad they don’t share their methodology!! We all know the problems with methodology on many of these surveys !
