I have frequently heard of the one that won in our state, but I have not been to it. I have heard good things about it. There used to be a fabulous hole in the wall burger joint in our community, but I think it’s gone unfortunately
I just recently heard about the winner for our state. It’s in a town not too far from me, but in a direction I never travel … no one I know & no businesses I frequent. H & I plan to check it out sometime, though, based on the rave reviews.
Nope, this is a terrible ranking, because their CA pick is in LA, and I know the best food is in the Bay Area… wrong or right, I will die on this hill.
We should question their methodology!
I guessed and was correct.
Krug’s Tavern? I’ve never been — and tbh, a pizza burger doesn’t sound very nice
I agree with the choice for my state (Pick-Quick in Washington), although I don’t go to the Fife location. Pick-Quick burgers taste a lot like In-N-Out burgers.
Hmmm. First of all I’ll say I checked my state, my home state and a neighboring state - had heard of none of them and TBH, the pics do not look all that great!
We try not to eat much red meat these days, but our state’s pick is not too far from us, so we may need to go check it out
It’s in Newark and is known for great burgers (white manna was my next guess). I’ve never been because I like burgers but rarely order them out (too messy). My husband likes pizza burgers (they’re on most menus) but I’m a traditional lettuce tomato onion pickles mayo ketchup burger eater. If I am going down to Newark for food it’s going to be Portuguese/Spanish!
I can’t imagine going to a place called “The Chuckbox” no matter how highly it’s rated, but I’m not a burger eater.
DH says the article is dead wrong about Maine. For him, it’s Butcher Burger in Portland all the way.
I’ve never heard of the MA place. Probably because it’s in Holyoke, and most people on the North Shore & South Shore believe Massachusetts stops at Worcester.
I like Tasty Burger but KKatie’s is probably the best.
Well, I have had W&M burgers. They’re OK, I guess but over-priced & over-rated. They are a hole-in-the-wall with inadequate parking, for sure.
Haven’t been to the Illinois place even though I lived in the state for decades. I’ve already been to Al’s in NC, where we recently moved. It would be hard to find a better hole-in-the-wall restaurant burger. But our trip was made even better because an elderly man who was dining alone joined our table because it was very crowded. We spent the night dissing Duke, from Christian Laettner to the color of their blue and everything in between. Highly entertaining evening. (don’t @ me Dukies! )
When I lived in Los Angeles I drove by the California pick regularly. I know it’s an institution but I can’t recall if I ever ate there.
For some weird reason I’ve been craving burgers. I’ve never been much of a beef eater but for the last month or so I’ve been thinking burgers every time we go out. Yesterday we tried a newer spot that people have mentioned and I thought it was only fair. I wouldn’t go back. It’s a small chain I think out of LA, the Win-Dow.
The Owl Cafe in San Antonio, NM, is legendary. Home of the original green chile cheeseburger. I’ve been there a couple of times when visiting the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge.
The Owl has been around since the early 1940s. All the scientists and engineers from the Manhattan Project who went Trinity Site, all had dinner at The Owl the night before the atomic bomb was detonated.
The Buckhorn Tavern, also in San Antonio, just catty corner from the Owl Cafe on the main drag (San Antonio is a tiny town so the Main Street is only a couple of blocks long.) , also has a killer green chile cheeseburger that a lot people like better than The Owl’s. My opinion–you can’t go wrong with either one.
There’s second location of The Owl Cafe in Albuquerque. Not nearly as good as the original. (And not owned by the same people as the original Owl Cafe.)
I’ve never been to the one in my home state of MD, but I went thru the whole list out of curiosity. I was pleasantly surprised to see that I have actually been to one of the places mentioned - Zip’s Cafe in Cincinnati, coincidentally recommended to me by CC’s @partyof5! The picture in the article does not look like a very good burger and doesn’t resemble anything that we had. Definitely a hole in the wall place, very dark inside with outdated decor, but it had charm and good service. Plus the burger was not only super cheap, but also pretty good!
I live pretty near to Newark and have never heard of it. But I’m not a burger person, so maybe that’s why.
I have never heard of our winner in Sedalia CO (very small town sw of Denver). In fact, I have rarely heard the town mention - it’s fairly remote.
