Nobody gets out alive.

Well, let them have as much time as then can.

So sorry to hear this.

Wow, hadn’t heard. Thanks for posting.

May he RIP

Side note: Burt is Mr R’s grandma’s cousin.

Although sad in some ways, I prefer to think of Burt Reynold’s passing as an end to his pain which appeared to be considerable. Thanks for posting @jym626 , as I’d not heard about this.

I remember a friend and I having great difficulty getting a copy of the magazine with the famous photo. One (very small town) drug store owner threatened to call our mothers and another just flat refused to sell it to anyone under 18. Given what seems to have been a preference for hairless men in recent years, it may be hard for some to believe what an appealing man Burt was considered to be in the '70s.

^Yes, love the quote from the article that he was considered the “standard of hirsute masculinity”.

I loved Hooper when I was a kid.

My mother used “that picture” to teach us my sisters and I our first group lesson on sex ed.

I always thought he was so handsome, but I never realized he was the same age as my mother!

I used that picture (and the next months Cosmo pinup) to persuade the men at the accounting department of the oil company I was working to take down their naked women posters. They told me “tough” when I told them it made myself and the other female staff uncomfortable. It took less than 24 hours of them being uncomfortable looking at my posters for them to say they’d take their posters down if I took mine down. I should have said “tough”. It was pretty hilarious seeing their faces when they walked up to my desk though.

Thanks Burt. RIP.

I still recall my Daddy being pulled aside by the head librarian of our nearby branch, she whipped out a pen and tilted it, showing him the picture. First Burt covered, then as the tilt worked, Burt naked

I thought this was an interesting article about the roles Mr. Reynolds turned down through his career.

Burt Reynolds local notoriety…we have a restaurant, Tony Packo’s - made famous by Klinger on the show M.A.S.H. - Jamie Farr is from here. Burt was in town years ago and went to the original restaurant to dine. One of the things they are famous for are their hungarian hot dogs. He loved it so much he took a marker and signed a hot dog bun when the owner requested his autograph. This became a tradition and now all their restaurants feature “buns of fame” - walls of signed “buns” from celebs.

As my realist wife says “It is our destiny to die”

I’ll admit to never having much affinity for football, but I’m glad Burt had one on hand for his 1972 pose. Best wishes to him, as he makes his final touchdown.

Honestly, I wasn’t a huge fan. I always found him more creepy than appealing.

DH tells me that Deliverance was such a scary movie that it caused folks to cancel camping trips down South.

He thought the original “Longest Yard” was the only really good BR movie, but I never saw it as I don’t care for sports films. The “Smokey and the Bandit” films were pop schlock.

I don’t mean to be disrespectful, I know he had plenty of fans. Just not my style.

I always thought it was kind of cool he did the centerfold and was sorry to read that he regretted it as he thought it cost him roles as a serious actor. I’m glad it had at least one good result! I don’t think I’ve ever seen any of his movies.
