I guess it’s that time of year where we learn of kids devastated to have to settle for being admitted to fine schools across the USA. I’m still stumped as to whether his is rooted in entitlement or myopia. State U is a great school. So is your regional LAC. Congrats and good luck to everyone who got in anywhere; you will be a success if you are a curious student and work hard. To the few who actually get no admits, the US gives you the second chance of CCs, a concept unheard of in most countries. Life will be good if you let it be good.
And the “calling kids disappointed by their failure in a process nearly no one understands derogatory things like first world admission problems” begins anew also.
I am sorry but with all due respect there is no purpose to your post other than to be incendiary. I genuinely do not know what your possible objective could be otherwise.
He was using snark to urge us to have some perspective. I can’t help but think of a scene from “Silicon Valley” where one of the characters is devastated by his “financial ruin.” The punchline was that he was no longer a billionaire but only worth $900 million.
I understand that – just don’t know why “using snark” helps anybody.
“First World Problem” is a pejorative, without question.
I missed that memo, then. I use First World Problem to describe things that happen in my life often and it’s not meant to be insulting, just remind me how good this overall gig really is. Possibly different people are using that term in different ways?
Haha great post!! Actually gave me some reassurance
@Postmodern - I wasn’t trying to be mean, sorry if I came off that way. When I see posters here despondent about having to go to the University of Michigan, there is something wrong. I’ll be happy if my own kids go to State U or Regional LAC someday.
I say give the kids their time to be disappointed and process it all. They will move on, but a little empathy for a sad kid is not going to hurt anyone.
Appreciate that @snarlatron .
It is sad. Some more so than others. It seems every year it gets harder, and still no one seems to give these kids the basic application toolkit to avoid this. Overworked GCs, I guess.
