We never seem to talk about American Idol on this forum, but I thought that it might be appropriate, considering the music style tonight. Did anyone watch, what did you think?

I watched and I don’t know what to think! I thought Syesha embraced the MT style more than the others, but I’m not sure that was the objective. As strange as it may sound, I enjoyed Jason Castro’s take on Memories. I can’t believe Brooke stopped the band and started over, and David A. took his song completely off in a different direction. I thought JCS was a good choice for Carly, but did not think David C. was particularly impressive as the Phantom, although this week did not lend itself to his usual flair.

I had looked forward to this week, and I must say I was disappointed. None of them gave me goose bumps.

I think I agree with you, overall I was kinda disappointed also. I did really like Syesha though, she’s definitely an MT girl!

Syesha was WAY flat and I love jason castro

I also really liked Syesha’s performance…and I have to say that I have not really been impressed with her too much in the past.

I was SHOCKED when Brooke stopped and started over…I have never seen anyone do that before, EVER (other than when she herself did it once before). I was mortified for her and I really think that she’ll be going home.

I cringed when I realized that Jason was going to sing ‘Memory’ but in a weird way, I was pleasantly surprised.

Carly was screaming a bit, but I really liked her performance, too. I love Jesus Christ Superstar!

David A. sang well, but I just don’t care for that sort of “pop” singing that he does each week…I just don’t like it.

Davis Cook sang the POTO song pretty much flawlessly…his voice sounded great, but it was kind of weird to see him sing it…kind of boring for him. I still liked it, though.

I liked David Cook’s performance. I thought he improved on the song, but I’m no ALW fan. The main thng I got from it is every time I think I’ve seen ALW at his creepiest, he tops it.

On a side note, Jordin Sparks is on total vocal rest with a vocal cord hemorrage. Take care of those voices kids!!

One Rock and Roll Too Many - It was very good, but I think towards the end, she started losing the “theatricality” that she wanted by playing for the audience instead of the song.

Memory - Dreadful. Bored to tears. VERY week. Missed everything about the song.

You Must Love Me - Natural actress? ***?! “Forced” was the right word ALW. And the intonation on the vocals was sick. OMG. This was painful

Think of Me - Very good. Very interesting. Tonight, I noticed he contorts his mouth when he sings.

Superstar - SHARP. Other than that, a fair performance. Had fun with it, which is good.

Music of the Night - Weaker top notes, or uncontrolled, got better though. His face for “be”, however, made me cringe.

David, David & Jason = Top final 3!!!
They have talent, uniqueness, charisma (which equals stage presence) & marketability.

(Btw…Brooke started & stopped during a previous song while she was playing the piano…Randy had commented on it - maybe he forgot…although he (& Simon) seems to be OK with it (?).)
P.S. Must be hard to be told not to close your eyes when you’re so used to it…felt sorry for David’s forced wide-eyed look.

I’ve been watching some of it on Youtube this year and making notes in my blog. mwahaha … I was disappointed with this week more because of the song choices that were apparently thrust on the contestants than their actual performances. My feeling is that most did the best they could with what was offered within their limitations. Remember, these are pop/rock/soul singers - not MT specialists - and, going in, I just assumed that them doing MT would be as disastrous as trained MTers sometimes come off trying pop/rock/soul. However, for the most part, they did better than I would have thought. That being said …

Syesha - This song was a total gimme for her. She tended flat, but you kind of expect that out of R&B types. Some say it’s actually part of the style. My problem with her is that she’s more or less dime a dozen and very predictable. I personally know at least three singers who do that style as well or better than her … and I’m not even in MT.

Jason - He is one of the guys on this season who I would actually buy music from. Unique coffee house type performer whose technical vocal imperfections are part of what makes him. Totally sold me with the Leonard Cohen song he did earlier in the year. This week was an abomination on a lot of levels, though. “Memory” for him? Are you kidding me? I’d rather forget … Low notes were all over the place. I think he might have pulled it off with a different arrangement … Just him and his guitar …

Brooke - I actually started watching this year because people around school kept saying I’m her evil twin. I disagree, but evs … “Wonderful natural actress?” Ummm … not. At least not until she finds a way to quiet all that internal dialog she has going on when she performs. It’s killing her … completely. Somebody needs to get her a copy of A Soprano On Her Head for when she gets home. She’s all kinds of in her own way.

David A - As much as I despise cheesy pop balladeers, this kid is pretty amazing. Great control although he has a tendency to let his breathing get shallow. Excellent interpretive skills within his style. He’s probably the eventual winner although I’d never in a million years buy his music.

Carly - Finally a song that fits her even though it was written for a male. This would have been better had they transposed it down a little. Kept whiffing the high note on “SUperstar.” I like that she’s polished her look a bit.

David C - I was really disappointed in the song choice for him, but he did pretty well considering it’s about as out of his normal style as you can get without going into classical repertoire. He was sharp on the low notes at the beginning and the ending was beyond self indulgent in my book. Evs … He got through it okay and showed some maturity in his phrasing. I would have much rather heard him take on one of the Judas songs from “JC Superstar.” He’s have eaten that up.

Going into the evening husband and I predicted this week would be a disaster for Jason and Brooke and they pretty much proved us right. I dislike Jason as I think he ahs a weak voice, little control, and bad breathing all of which were evident. At my age, I don’t find 20 year old men cute so I guess I am immune to the look. I do think if they want to revive the Monkeys, he could do the Davey Jones role.

I liked David A. interpretation of the song. He worked it to his benefit which I thought showed a lot of confidence. I liked Sayesha and I would say this is the first time I have ever really noticed what she did. I thought Superstar was a bad choice of song because it is really pretty boring - the chorus repeats and if you aren’t doing something with it, or have people on stage acting, there ain’t much there.
I thought David C was ok but also rather boring, I thought he might have done better if he had taken some risks with the song.

fishbowl, your notes are like an educated, knowledgeable version of my own impressions Thanks for explaining what I was feeling. I would mention that as soon as I heard ALW gushing about the “wonderful natural actress” qualities of a pretty young girl with billowing long hair–well, I hope all you MT majors are taking note of what gets the attention of such producers. Did he have to hold her hands (and not let go) and have her stare into his eyes as she sang? Anyone else reminded of the Phantom? Or am I just too jaded and old mom?

I asked my MT student d how it would be if ALW played the piano for a her and some friends while they sing his songs! She felt most of the idols did not truly realize who they were in the company of. Although we did like David C. stating, in so many words, that he did not change the composition of the song because it was ALW. Jason took on Memories without a clue of what it was about. I think we all gasp a little when he said he had no idea a cat sang that song. :o
These idols are not MT kids…and I wonder just how much training they have had. I will say from what I have seen they are a talented group. It was an interesting night. Glad to hear the judges say that it would be one of their hardest weeks!

David C. mentioned growing up doing musical theatre, and Shyesha has a theatre background as well.

So tonight is the finals. Are you hoping for David C. or David A. to win? We are huge fans here and have watched all the seasons.

We went yesterday to the Nokia in LA and saw the show. It was the second time my husband and I have been to a taping of American Idol. We saw it in March when David Hernandez was voted off. Our girls could not go to the taping in March (one was on a school trip and the oldest because of a test) so my husband was able to get off work and we went on our own. I had been signed up online for a year and a half before we got the tickets! Then last Thursday my oldest daughter got an email offering tickets for either Tuesday or Wednesday and we signed up as soon as we could and got the Tuesday tickets.

We had to wait in line 5 hours yesterday before we got into the theatre which they said seats about 7,000. We enjoyed the show, but it was much more fun when we saw it in the studio with a small audience. Both Davids sounded great yesterday although we all thought that David A.'s microphone was turned up much louder than David C.s.

We are all big David C. fans here although we think David A. is very talented, we just don’t see him being as popular when he puts out his own music as we think David C. will be. There was so much talent this season and when we saw the bottom 3 people sing live in March my husband and I were so impressed by how wonderful they all were.

Since I am here in CA I avoid being online after the east coast watches the show since I like to be surprised!

I have mixed feelings. I like David C much more that David A because David A is a bit one dimensional and David C can sing so many different styles well. My daughter has downloaded several Of David C’s tracks from i-tunes (we were so dissappointed they did not put out a full length version of The First time ever I saw your face) and his voice is so distinctive and he is a pleasure to listen to. He has that special something. My mixed feelings are that on the one hand I would like him to win but on the other I would like him to have the freedom to record his choices rather than some of the Sap that AI winners are forced into.

I am debating about buying tickets for the AI show for my daughter and I but the good ones are gone already.

I think they are both winners. They have two different sounds which makes it hard for me to compare. I must say I like them both and would gladly listen to either one of them. They both know music, which is refreshing. It has been years since I have watched, but this group of talent kept me tuned in!! Hmmmm…I predict David will win! :D

I also wish that they would put a full version of the songs on Itunes. We also have downloaded many of David C.'s songs from there. I also love how this season the contestants played instuments in addition to singing. It really worked to many of their advantage.

I wish I was recording the show - so i could fast forward through it. I am so bored. When I am not cringing. My face probably looks like Simons during the fantasia performance last week. I was thinking of buying tickets to the tour - after the last hour and 15 minutes of misery i don’t think I will!!

I agree with you swimcatsmom-this is torture! No interest in seeing the tour after watching this
