Angelina Jolie files for Divorce

Did she really or is that one of many attention seeking ploys? She likes to create headlines and drama.

I look at myself when I was in my early 20s and hardly recognize myself. I am very glad that I wasn’t born into a family for which publicity was a virtue or at least a necessary evil.

Jolie has retained Wasser who is already on record as stating she seeks to move “quickly and quietly,” preferring to settle her cases out of the spotlight. And I have to assume someone with her experience will know what kind of agreement would pass the “best interest of the child” judicial review. The oldest boy is over 14 so the court will also have to consider his preferences as to living arrangements. I have read that California courts favor joint legal and physical custody arrangements.

I am also thinking that these children have flitted from country to country their whole lives – both parents have always said they want their children to be “citizens of the world.” So while a Judge normally might not look kindly on an arrangement where children shuttle between continents, I am not so sure a Judge would see it that way with this particular family. To the Jolie-Pitt children hopping onto a private plane is synonymous with our children hopping into a car or an Uber/taxi.

Shiloh was granted Namibian citizenship at birth. Looks like there is a law under consideration that if passed could revoke it:

But I agree at the end of the day the children’s citizenship is most likely not going to be relevant. She brought the family to California and filed there so presumably she is submitting them to the jurisdiction of the California courts.

If she did the paperwork, all the children should be US citizens. Pitt adopted the adopted children as a second parent since they were not married at the time. He’d also have to show paternity of the others, although that might be easy in France or Africa (very easy in some states, harder in others).

It doesn’t appear Jolie is contesting that he’s the father or that they live in California. I don’t think they are a typical family or that Brad will be having visitation every Wednesday and every other weekend. Because of their schedules, it’s more likely he’ll get blocks of time, two weeks here, a month there.

When this first came out I was like well ok he was the problem. But the more I read the more I think the media is being manipulated. We will never know what really happened but she rented the place and had the papers drawn up before the fight. I wouldn’t be surprised if she planned the fight along with the “witness” to call it in.

sorghum–yes.

@HarvestMoon1, why do you think the court must consider a 14 year old’s preference? There is no federal law on this that I am aware of. And I don’t think it is standard across states.

As long as the adopted kids were admitted to the US as permanent residents, they are automatically US citizens thanks to the Child Citizenship Act of 2000. No paperwork needed to be filed on their behalf.

I know the courts will consider the preference of the child (qualifying age might vary) in NY, California and Illinois. Have no idea about the other states but would not be surprised if others weigh it as one factor as well.
