I applied for on-campus residence and paid the non-refundable advance payment fee of $75.00. I was notified of my check-in date, which is about 5 or 6 days after my mandatory orientation sessions. I have requested to change my check-in date but they have refused. I am very angry because this would mean I would have to spend hundreds of dollars staying in a hotel or motel until I am able to move into my residence. I’m also angry at how unorganized the university is. I don’t think that I am unreasonable to think the check-in date should be at least before mandatory orientation sessions.

Well, most students attended the regular orientations in May and June. The late orientations are just that, late orientations. Our experience has been that the signing up for orientations, the orientation itself, and everything else has been highly organized.

If you decided to attend FSU late, or were called off the waitlist, or just decided not to attend the usual orientations in May or June, then you will just have to work with what they offer you. The dorms open up on a certain day, and they do not open up before that. They have to have time for some of the dorms to be turned over from Summer C, some need cleaning and painting. Often, the dorm staff/RA’s are not there until a certain date.

It is unfortunate that you are not able to attend an orientation and then start class. The later the orientation, the less likely there are spots open in classes, etc and the earlier the orientation, the better. While some small LAC’s do orientation right at time of move in, most large state U’s do orientation in May or June, and allow enough time after orientation for registratation, book purchase, etc. Dorms pretty much open for everyone on August 20. I know that for Marching Chiefs you have to be there sooner, and there may be an allowance to move in earlier, or stay in an open dorm. For girls registered for rush, move in can be on Aug 18th. Perhaps via facebook you can meet someone in an apt who will let you sleep on the couch for a few days. Where are you coming from?

Under the circumstances I would suggest you personally go to Housing and explain your situation. Ask for a supervisor if necessary. I would think the university would accommodate somehow your predicament since changes in dates have occurred. (Remember to stay calm and be patient as you explain your situation to the employees.)

If Housing does not help, you might then try contacting the Dean’s Office for Undergraduate Studies ([fsu.edu | Division of Undergraduate Studies](http://undergrad.fsu.edu/)) for assistance. They may be able to help.

the dorms officially open on wednesday August 20, however, tI read somewhere that they are allowing girls who intend to rush for sororities to check in earlier then that.

I am not suggesting that you want to rush a sorority, in fact i do not even know your gender, but this may give you an opportunity to check in to your dorm earlier as an exception.

p2n made a great suggestion to contact the housing office and explain your circumstance. they will be allowing in some students early (girls intending to rush).

good luck and most of all don’t let this experience start your fsu career out on a sour note. you have four great years ahead of you and you should approach the experience with as positive an attitute as possible.

I’m unsure what “late orientation” you are making reference to in your post.

Residence Halls for Fall 2008 Open at 9 a.m. on August 20.
The late orientation for Jr/Sr Fall Transfers will take place August 20.
The late orintation for Freshmen/So. Transfers will take place August 21-22.

Freshmen Convocation is August 24 at 1:30 p.m. at the Civic Center.
Fall Classs Begin Monday, August 25.

There are NO orientations taking place 5 days before residence halls open for Fall 2008.

If you have questions, it is best to contact the University (Housing, Admissions, or New Student Programs) to discuss your concerns directly to get the most complete and acurate information.

Then these are concerns not with the larger University but policies established by the International Student Center and College of Motion Picture/Film. I would contact them directly to see if their is flexibility offered in when they offer their mandatory programs if housing is not open or see what arrangements for housing/lodging they are offering to assist students. Usually in these cases, if they are requiring students to attend a mandatory program they have through of how residential students will deal with housing - they might even be able to work out special arrangements with University Housing for you. Again, it is always best to go directly to the Department you have questions for when a concern comes up.

But I am corrent that the University orientation programs for undergraduates occur on August 20 and 21-22 after halls open on August 20 to accomodate students needing to attend those mandatory programs.

Ragans also has undergraduate students beyond the freshmen level.

Most of the forum members are more familiar with undergraduate and FTIC issues but not international or graduate student issues. You would be best to contact the international center on 850.644.1702 or email intctr@admin.fsu.edu

I checked for you today and learned the following…
Normally FSU opens halls earlier than they are this year and that is why the hall opening date falls after International and Graduate Student Orientation. These two areas didn’t know the hall opening date had been moved back to Aug. 20 from the previous weekend when they set their dates.

If you are an international student, students that write/call the International Student Center if they cannot check in to campus housing if that is their situation and will given names of hotels to stay in if they like OR the option of attending a later orientation on August 21 (after Halls open on August 20). Graduate student orientation is August 19 and many of the departments hold orientations before then for grad students–so most grad students will have to be here before halls open. The registration window for international & grad students opens on Monday, August 18 and students will need to attend orientation before the registration hold is lifted. The international center will lift the holds in advance for those students who delay arrival due to housing (as long as you plan to attend the August 21 session). To arrange all this, you again need to cal the International Center. So there is a solution, you just have to be proactive in making some calls or completing emails.

FSULeon it is good you clarified and apologized to the op …while I think your intentions are good you do come off as being “the man.” The people on this board are part of a virtual community we/that looks out for one and other —unconditionally.

Just to add…but those auditioning for the Marching Chiefs can move into their dorms Friday evening, August 15. As mentioned above contacting the primary departments, International Students and Graduate, may help. It’s worth a try… Good luck.
