Ann Arbor is awesome

So I visited a friend in Ann Arbor last week and loved the town (a little too liberal but that’s ok) and the campus. Chances?

Recs: Counselor doesn’t like me that much, but the other two should be great.

GPA: 3.9
SAT: 2190

I say you have a great shot.

Does Mich only consider single sitting?

Yeah they do. Match. The only negative is you’re OOS but you should still get in if you apply early.

“Recs: Counselor doesn’t like me that much, but the other two should be great.”

You only need the counselor rec and 1 more from a core subject teacher.

^Really? IB diploma with a 3.92. I think he’s in.

Safe match. You have a very good chance. Make sure to complete the application before November 1.

Do they offer early action? I’m not gonna apply ED if they have it but it would be nice to know by December 15

Yea its basically early action. Michigan uses rolling admissions.

Michigan has an “Early Response” option, which is completely non-minding.

^^ If anyone is confused, he meant non-binding. We know it’s late over there. :)

Yes, it was late and I was tired. I meant non-binding.

mich seems to like new york. public magnet helps. honestly, i would say safety. a lot of people make it seem like getting into UofM is MUCH harder than it is. with an admit rate of 35+% or however incredibly high it is, getting in shouldnt be that bad. I would say you have a good chance at getting into higher ranked schools. but michigan is a great experience and i chose it over a higher ranked school. but it seems like you have a very good shot.

mediabob, nobody makes it seem like it is “MUCH” harder to get into Michigan than it really is. Unfortunately, many here seem to think it is much easier to get into Michigan than it really is, and when students seeking guidance are told that they have a good chance of getting in and are later rejected, they are shocked.

In cases such as the OP (over 3.8 unweighed GPA AND over 2100/32 on the SAT/ACT), most posters on this forum would say an applicant’s chances are good to very good. Four of the five who responded above said the OP has a very good chance of getting in.

Generally, we will assign a reach to students with sub 3.7 GPAs and or sub 1900/28 ACT scores. From my experience, the majority of such applicants are rejected.

And a 35% acceptance rate is not “incredibly” high. Until 20 years ago, schools like Columbia, Cornell and Penn used to accept 40% of their applicants. Until 5 or 6 years ago, schools like Chicago and Johns Hopkins used to accept 40% of their applicants. Michigan’s 40%-45% acceptance rate is not incredibly high when you consider that the majority of those applicants have 3.7+ unweighed GPAs and 1900+/27+ SAT/ACT scores… and 75% of admitted students have unweighed GPAs over 3.7 and SAT/ACT scores over 1900/27.

thanks mediabob!
i actually am looking at many higher ranked schools, but i really like the college atmosphere of Ann Arbor and of course Michicgan in and of itself is already a great college

“i actually am looking at many higher ranked schools”

HonorsCentaurs, there are only 5 universities that are truly ranked higher than Michigan. Michigan is one of the 20 or so universities that can legitimately claim to be ranked #6 in the nation. Where Michigan wins in a landslide is in its versitility. It is one of only 3 or 4 top 25 universities that has awesome athletics, it is one of only 3 or 4 top 25 universities to have a lively and spirited campus, it is one of only 3 or 4 top 25 universities located in one of the greatest college towns in the US. And it is THE ONLY top 25 university to have all of the above characteristics.

In short, if you can get into Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Stanford or Yale, go for one of them…otherwise, go for Michigan because none of the remaining universities is better academically and Michigan quite literaly blows all universities out of the water in terms of overall undergraduate experience and college atmosphere.

i dunno about that, it’s ranked like number 30 or something.
so it blows schools like NU, Chicago, Penn, etc out of the water?
And where is it ranked as number 6?

Stop relying so heavily on USNWR rankings HonorsCentaur. Michigan has NO weak departments academically. Most schools rated above it are relatively weak in some areas of study. Alexandre never said that Michigan “blows schools” out of the water. He just stated that it is comparable or better than all but a handful of top universities in this country.

uhhh i’m not relying on rankings?
i know umich is great but it’s not my top pick

HonorsCentaur, we each have our preferences. That Michigan is not your top pick is perfectly fine. However, whether Michigan is ranked #6 or #30 in one particular ranking does not make it so. There are litteraly dozens of top universities. Depending on the ranking authority (and its formula) some universities will benefit and others will get the shaft. The US News formula seems to benefit schools such as Penn, WUSTL and Emory while hurting schools like Cornell, Brown, Cal and Michigan. Rankings will never get it right unless they group universities, but then they would lose their appeal.

At any rate, I am glad you liked Ann Arbor and the Michigan campus. Given your credentials, you have a good shot at Michigan, which means that come New Year’s (assuming you apply before November 1), you could well have an acceptance from a good university… just in case.

awesome, thanks alexander!
i do hope no one took offense in my comments, i’m not too concerned with rankings and i know Mich is a great school just not my number one choice.
thanks everyone for the feedback! i can’t wait to see if i get in or not
