Ann Arbor has everything you would ever want in a college town. Anything (for the most part) that you can do in a big city can be done here.

is it a pedestrian-friendly place or do you suggest having a car to get around...?

Having a car would be more of a hassle than a luxury when it comes to driving around AA. No places to park, awful traffic, and a confusing trafic patter (one way streets, etc). Also the city is extremely pedestrian friendly, at almost every intersection pedestrians can cross whenever they want.

We're from CA and it was my son's favorite college town coast-to-coast. The only negative for him was the weather and for me the cost for him to attend. He's at Berkeley now, but we will always have a fondness for Ann Arbor!

Also public transportation makes it very easy to go anywhere in the city as well.

Does it have a big city feel to it or is it more like a college town?

It has a medium city feel, and it's definitely more of a college town. You're not going to New York or Chicago, but almost everything a big city would have Ann Arbor has.
