Anonymous attacks

Anyone think the recent internet attacks by Anonymous are superficial? A few days ago, Anonymous only took down the websites of the Department of Justice, FBI, RIAA, Copyright.gov, whitehouse.gov, and many more. But as long as Anonymous doesn’t breach the sensitive databases of the government it’ll be ok. Not many people go on these websites daily for important tasks! Those websites are like a facade for the company/government. It’s not like the FBI uses [FBI — Homepage](http://www.FBI.gov) to log into their accounts…

I dunno, that’s just how I view it. Should I be more scared? Anyone think the severity of the attacks will increase?

Yeah it’s really just symbolic. This comic explains it nicely:

http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/cia.png

e: Anonymous has already stolen all sorts of private information like credit card info from various databases. Anyone who thinks they’re standing up for “the people” is incredibly naive.

oh yea you’re right, but I was just talking about the attacks against the government databases.

I think they’re symbolically interesting…but not in that taking down those websites requires any amount of great skill. The interesting part is that they can get so many people to really see and understand the “battle” as it happens, instead of it taking place in some far-off land or simply in Congress. Taking down important government websites shows that the people have a voice and are capable of doing something that at least SEEMS important, even if technically it’s not a big deal (though I think if significant government censorship did occur, groups like Anonymous would put a little more time into hacking more vital websites, which would be scary but interesting in my opinion).

We all use the Internet constantly and I think there are many people that are really against SOPA/PIPA because their favorite website told them to. Mock that reason if you want, but it really does work and reaches to people that would ordinarily be unaffected by such things. If anything will make people care, it will be the Internet, I think.
