Another 529 plan question

I know the cost of attendance this year for school. He has a meal plan I know is a qualified expense, but we are also giving him grocery money. If he keeps the receipts, is that considered a qualified expense? I know we can’t exceed the Room and Board portion.

If the meal plan is the maximum one, I’d say the answer is no. If the meal plan is just a partial one and the COA list a higher amount as the cost of meals, then I’d say save the receipts and request that amount from your 529 plan before the end of the tax year.
