another bombing

“Whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation, take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.”
~Elie Wiesel

Jeez. When will it stop?

"Jeez. When will it stop? "

Sadly, I don’t think it will ever stop

War and battles have existed since humans learned how to pick up stones. Heck, we see lasting warfare even among non-human primates. We just have better technology now which both causes more destruction and allows news of attacks to spread rapidly.

It will never stop but one of the things we know (in general) reduces aggression is economic security. When people’s needs are met, they are less prone to violence. So maybe the answer to how to reduce these attacks lies in economic empowerment.

Someone stepped on what effectively was a land mine in New York, although it is not determined whether the explosives were intended to be a land mine.

Man Injured in Central Park Explosion

The incident in Central Park is scary. I’ve never liked fireworks, which this explosive might have been intended to be.

Romani -Economics doesn’t seem to be the factor here. From the NY Times about Bangladesh:

“That’s what we’re absolutely riveted by,” said Kazi Anis Ahmed, a writer and publisher of the daily newspaper The Dhaka Tribune. “That these kids from very affluent families with no material want can still be turned to this kind of ideology, motivated not just to the point of killing but also want to be killed.”

Pretty scary.

When one side or the other loses.

The quote accompanying the op is one I wasn’t aware of. Thanks for positing it.

that is a talking point … not based in reality, it used to avoid discussing the actual reason…doughmom you are correct.

》》 After reports suggested that all terrorists involved in the recent attack at Dhaka restaurant, in which 20 people were killed, were highly educated and belonged to rich families, Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen rubbished the arguments that poverty makes somebody a terrorist.《《

Ah, yes. Here we go. It’s * never * the attackers’ fault. These men would have * never * committed violence if it wasn’t for religion. Those poor, innocent lambs, swayed by that evil book, The Grimoire - er - I mean the Qur’an. I hear it urges people to boil puppies alive among other things.

Seriously though, the amount of people who think they’re “experts” on religion and terrorism is absolutely staggering. People are free to have opinions, but to present those same opinions as facts speaks more of a person’s ego more often than not.

This is an interesting read that explains the problems with the label “[insert religion] terrorism”.

Of course it couldn’t be the attackers fault. It’s the bomb’s fault, we all know that, don’t we? Stricter bomb control is in order. If bombs were more regulated this never would have happened.

yes infinity man those people were not drawn together to kill in the name of their religion and did not force reciting of the
quran to avoid torture. but hey religion has been an awesome force for peace and tranquility. (sarcasm) and religions like catholicism spread into south and central america because the natives requested the spaniards and portuguese get them a new religion. and islam spread out of the arabian peninsula to parts of asia, africia and the middle east because the folks that were zoroastrians, christian, hindu, buddhist, animists, jews etc…really needed something new to follow and sent a post card to their islamic conquers inviting them to come . sure religion is just swell and never a motivator for hatred and killing.
and the wikipedia link reads like a poorly constructed term paper I wrote at 2am the night before it is due.

IMO this bombing is political, not religious. ISIS wants territory and it’s willing to kill a lot of Muslims to get it. Certainly many more of them are killed than non-Muslims.

Since Islam is both a political and a religious idealogy (as are most religions), it is both religious and political in nature.

@sylvan8798 Exactly! Much the same way the cold war was political based on an ideology that was directly opposite to that of ours.

Maybe it’s as simple as the fact it’s a religious ideology. If there’s a distinction between it and other ones, it would be what it’s willing to do to advance political goals.

In that respect, it’s not like most religions at all.

It would be logical to think that only people without hope for the future would become suicide bombers. But I think there is more than that going on here. It is anger and spite as well. It must be a vicious and deep anger that leads people to hack other people apart and then blow themselves up. Religion is just the cloak it hides behind. I think ISIL is a death cult more than anything else. But why, why, do young people from stable homes and peaceful areas travel to join them? What on earth is the appeal of these monsters? What is the appeal of pain, death, and destruction?

People use the term “being radicalized” but it seems more like people are being warped and brain washed. But they are willing to let that happen!

The father of one of the Bangladesh killers was horrified at his son’s actions but described him as being quiet and pious. “Someone must have gotten to him”, he said. But is it that? Isn’t is like blaming alcohol for making you do things you wouldn’t normally do? (I’m thinking of Brock Turner, et. al.) That “quiet and pious” young man was a suicidal killer. I worry that we can’t put an end to it until we understand it, and it just seems beyond comprehension.

On this fourth of July, I feel very fortunate to be living in a country where an athiiest can speak his mind in a place of worship and not get shot at.
