The reason my gpa is so low is because of fresh/soph year. Junior year I got a 4.5W and a 3.75UW. There’s a huge upward trend.

So…what are my chances? Is there anything I can do to improve my chances?

Why aren’t you taking calculus?

I would say retake SAT I… Since your GPA is low, the only way to show them definately for sure that you got brains is to get 2000+ on SATs, i would think…

Also I think you should’ve taken at least up to Pre-Calculus or something… (not necessarily calculus if you are bad at math) Remember to take SAT II at least one math/science as well.

I’d also suggest taking the ACT, some people find it easier than the SAT, and a strong composite ACT score might give you an extra boost.

Yea an upward trend is really good, but you need to shore it up with a better SAT or ACT score. Basically your argument has to be that freshman/soph year wasn’t really indicative of your abilities and strong stats like SAT scores help that.

I’m interested in majoring in journalism so I decided that going as far as calculus would be pointless. I’m planning on retaking the SAT in October. If I get a 2050ish would that raise my chances considerably?

The journalism program at Annenberg is considered one of the more difficult majors to be admitted to at USC.

Higher SAT scores will certainly help, as would a demonstrated interest in journalism or media. Have you been active on your school’s newspaper or yearbook?

I think you should still take some math and SAT II maths… It just shows what a well rounded person you are. I’m an art/animation major which really has nothing to do with math and I took AP Calculus BC… And besides, i think most people should take up to pre calculus…(<- my friend who hates math and who’s major is graphic design still took the class)

However if you think you are going to do horrible and get ugly scores, then no… (it’ll just lower your GPA)

I took pre-cal junior year and this next year I’m taking AP stat. AP calc was double block and if I had taken it I wouldn’t have been able to fit in all the classes I wanted to take.

I’m going to try to get a fall internship at a local newspaper or magazine. I’m also going to try to get on the school newspaper and improve my SAT scores. So those are my goals. Would that would make a drastic difference in the admissions decision?

Yeah so you have your math done… Internship would help also. Good luck!

for anneberg, that B in AP English won’t help you very much at all. try boosting your SAT score even more, and write stellar essays.

I actually recieved two B-'s for Honors English in my junior year, followed by an A- fall of senior year. (No AP English at my school.) It didn’t keep me out of the journalism program.

sorry to creep, but you’re at USC school of cinematic arts? what major? how did you get in? any advice?

Tesla, this thread is from 2006! uyulove started out at USC as an art major I think, then transferred to SCA Animation major.
