Berkeley’s got too many websites… I already have 7 bookmarked… >_>

Anyways, I just went to CALSO and signed up, as a Chemical Biology major, for
- Chemistry 4A
- Math 53
- Chemistry C96
which are my required classes, so I got that taken care of and ready to go :D

I was going to sign up for an English class, as my major needs 2 semesters of that, but after I saw my AP score for English Lit/Comp, I think I don’t need to take any more English. However, my schedule’s really light at the moment, and I have tons of time w/ nothing to do. So I was thinking of taking a class to satisfy my American Cultures requirement. What’s a good class that fulfills this requirement?

Also, I have some other general questions. In my financial aid award letter, it appears that I will have to pay ~3k with work-study. I didn’t get any information about this, so I was wondering how this works. Do they just knock at my door and give me some job on campus? Or do I have to be proactive and go through interviews to earn the job?

Also for textbooks, do we buy that on our own? What if we have financial aid that covers textbook costs?

I hope someone can point me in the right direction. URLs with info helps a lot!

I know for work study, because I’m in the same situation as you, there is a web site full of jobs that you do have to apply to, but work study students get priority over people just looking for jobs. There are a lot of different jobs available. Check

Also, I would love to hear about some good AC classes to take because I might sign up for one this semester as well

From what I got from the info session at CalSO, you’re only charged for your tuition and room (and other fees like SHIP, etc.). You pay for that however you want to. You may or may not get a refund that you can use for books, etc. The work study job is to pay for everything else, whether it be part of your CARs bill, books, food, etc, basically the cost of living.

If I’m wrong, please tell me. This is something I don’t wish to be misinformed about.

A good AC class to take is Sociology 3AC. I took that during Fall08 with Mary Kelsey and got an A- in the class. She’s a super nice professor and her lectures are pretty interesting. The only bad thing was that the class was at 8am Tues and Thurs. This might change for Fall 09 though so check the schedule. But besides the professor, the class itself is pretty interesting. You learn about inequality regarding race, economic class, and gender.

And regarding work study, you have to find the job yourself. I got work-study in my financial aid package last year but never got around to find a job so I didn’t get the money that was offer through work-study. Regarding buying textbooks, you basically have to buy it yourself, either with your own money or with the refund check from your leftover financial aid money. An advice about buying textbooks: Do a lot of comparison shopping before you buy your books. First semester, I got too lazy and just bought everything from the student store and ended up using more money than I should have. Compare the price of books from the student store and online (online is usually cheaper).
