My son is having a similar but slightly different problem as momnipotent’s D. Maybe someone out there can enlighten us?

Wireless connection to laptop works fine everywhere on campus. He can get to both local intranet and the internet. For wired operation, if on campus, he can get only to the local intranet (xxx.ufl.edu), but NOT internet. At home, wired works fine, can get to internet.

Any ideas?

You learn something new everyday!

According to the University of Florida website regarding network connections in their dorms:

“DHNet is wired to all student rooms in the residence halls. Service is at no extra cost as it is figured in with the rent charge. (DHNet for the Family/Graduate Student apartments is in Diamond Village (buildings 298, 301, 302, and 304 ONLY). No other Village Communitites have connectivity at this time. Internet connections are via modem only.”

After rummaging around the University of Florida website, it appears that students in the dorms only have intranet access! To get to the Web, you have to subscribe to the university’s dial-up service: Gatorlink. It costs an extra $5.00 a month and it has a limited number of usage hours.

See the following link: http://help.gatorlink.ufl.edu/acctinfo.html

Wow, I had no idea! Son lived in a different dorm during this past fall/spring than he’s living in now, and he had intra and internet access the whole time. I don’t recall anything about this…I don’t remember paying extra (maybe I didn’t notice $5 extra?).
Thanks for the tip!
I’ll look into that!

michuncle, I think the above link is out of date. This lists the last revision as May 1st 2005.

Here is another link that appears to be more current for UFL

http://housing.ufl.edu/housing/resfac_dhnet.html

Looks like internet access is free, at least at UFL

Being able to get to an intranet but not the internet are usually due to not configuring the browser with the appropriate proxy server. A proxy server is like a ‘gateway’ to the internet. It’s usually taken care of in the setup that allows the computer to work on their network in the first place.

First, figure out what the proxy server address and prt settings are (something like ‘http.ufl.edu’ and port ‘8080’). Then -

In IE: Tools->InternetOptions->Connections->LanSettings->Configure a Proxy

In other browsers you’ll find a similar setup.

I would have expected the ‘Automatically detect…’ to work though.

That would be downright strange for a Uni in this day and age to not allow free ethernet internet access from the dorms. Most campuses not only have that but also have wireless access from most of the campus.

Since I’m illiterate, I’m showing all this to my son and H (neither are here right now). The strange thing is that the internet just “poofed” out when my son was already using it during summer session in his dorm room.

It could ‘poof’ because of a change made by the Uni on their network or by your S somehow changing his network settings.

Has he pursued this with the Uni’s ‘resnet’ people yet?

Sorry for the confusion. UFL’s website is a bit confusing.

Evidently Gatorlink is UFL’s own dial-up ISP service that can be used for students living off campus or commuting from home. DHnet is the internet service in the dorms that allow students to log onto the Net.

See: http://www.housing.ufl.edu/housing/reslife_rulessingle.html#15b

The page describes the school’s network and its usage policy. Usage that the university deems inappropriate will result in restrictions on a student’s access to the network,.

I’m not suggesting that Doubleplay’s son has had his privileges restricted, but this seems to be a connection issue that the Resnet staff should be able to resolve…
