another computer question

My D called this morning. She is frustrated with a new computer she bought. Her old computer died and she had to replace on her own dime. She bought an inexpensive Compaq. She is having a problem getting on the internet. The computer is showing strong connectivity with the wireless network. She has gotten it to work on occasion. The other 3 computers in the house are Mac’s and they are working fine so she knows the problem is her computer.
She said she keeps getting windows popping up from Norton. She is thinking that for some reason the Norton is blocking her access.
I don’t know anything about computers. But when I removed the Norton from my computer and put on AVG the connectivity improved.
Should she start by removing the Norton?
I know I probably need for information to get help but for now this is all I have from her.

Yup. Have her get rid of Norton and get AVG. I further suggest she download Firefox and use it instead of Microsoft Internet explorer as her browser.

I second the AVG, but I’m a dinosaur and use Explorer (partly because son is pro Firefox)- latest issue of one of our PC magazines doesn’t mind Explorer for people like me.

If it is brand new, why can’t she get some tech support from Compaq? Or call your ISP - ours has good tech support people for this type of problem.

jmmom- that would be the logical action. But why call tech support when you can call MOM.
She removed the Norton and she was able to connect. Yesterday she installed AVG. (of course with a couple of calls to Mom)

Norton has both Anti Virus AND firewall (will need to know what is installed). AVG is just Anti Virus.

It could be Norton Firewall that is blocking access. Depending on the settings, you have to explicitly allow programs to access the internet (reduces the risk of viruses and trojans from sending out data).

If she can get on the internet with a hard wire connection, then it is her wifi card settings (or the card itself).

If she is having the same problems with a hard wire connection, then it is probably a firewall or anti-virus setting.
