Another curious kid: chances?

I’m yet another rising high school senior wondering into which college he’d fit well. My questions are:

Can I get into UNC-Chapel Hill?

What other schools (pref. local) would be nice fits?

Here are my stats:

White agnostic (Methodist background) male
Resides in North Carolina - rural/suburban area

Block scheduling - freshmen year:
4 A’s (including two honors courses)
4 B’s (including three honors courses)

Sophomore year:
6 A’s (including four honors courses)
2 B’s (both in honors courses)

Junior year:
5 A’s (honors plus one AP)
2 B’s (one honors, one AP)

Took four semesters of foriegn language
Five semesters of journalism

Projected senior year schedule:
AP Calculus AB
AP U.S. History
AP Psychology
Honors English IV
Teacher Asst.

Unweighted GPA: ~3.75
Weighted GPA: 4.5
Class rank (as of semester 5 of 8) : 14/308

SAT (taken twice; best of each)
V 650 / M 710 / W 650 essay 7 (ugh. timed essays.)

APs:
English Language - 3 (disappointed.)
Envrionmental Science - 1 (Ouch. I Mediocre instructor plus general lack of interest multiplied by required testing for GPA weight equals bomb.)

Extracurriculars include, but are not limited to:

 • Editor-in-chief of newspaper junior year (two other page editing positions held, one simultaneous to EIC)
 • National Honor Society president senior year
 • Link Crew (freshman orientation program) Leader
 • Additional participation (and possible future leadership in) Beta Club, Spanish Honor Society, Spanish Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Students Against Destructive Decisions, Tobacco Reality Unfiltered
 • Junior Marshal for graduation 2006
 • Rotary Scholar sophomore and junior years
 • invited to participate in Wofford Scholar program
 • Community service includes tutoring for benchmark exams, various holiday-themed and drug prevention-themed community events, volunteer work at local library

Intended major:
Mass Communication / Media Studies / Journalism (or other related fields)

I would say match.

Your course load has been pretty much the toughest possible–and you went 3.75 U/W. Your W GPA is 4.5, and UNC averages around 4.2 W GPA. Your SATs are above the UNC averages, your ECs are good, you’re in-state and the only negative here is the AP scores.

Presuming they don’t get weird about those (and they shouldn’t)–you should get in.

I would agree with everything Calcruzer says, exceeeept… beware the weighted GPA. Under other systems (like the one in my school), you’re schedule would only bring up your GPA so far by 0.04, not by .75 (big difference!). Not that I’m saying your GPA looks better than it is (it’s great!) but I’m not sure Calcruzer’s average weighted GPA is a helpful number at all. Unless UNC has a system to normalize GPAs, in which my entire post is pointless.
