another day, another mass shooting

Wasn’t there a shooting after a Jacksonville football game Friday night? It sounds like gangs.

CNN is reporting at least 11 shot, and at least 4 dead

They don’t call Florida the * Gunshine * State for nothing.

Why would you go to gangs as the cause? This was an video game tournament, not rival high schools where one might encounter an arch enemy.

It is too early to speculate.

This is getting so sadly … routine. When , WHEN will someone do something about it?? As others have said, regulations on plastic straws came along much faster. This is ridiculous.

This area is in downtown Jacksonville, just a few blocks from the Baptist church. Usually nothing happens in downtown Jax until after 1 pm on Sundays because of agreements with the church.

Unconfirmed reports was that shooter was someone who lost earlier in tournament and targeted some people and then killed himself.

If so guns + deranged people are not a good combination.

This is slightly off topic but on Saturday night in Arkansas someone heard a pop at a high school football game which was thought to be gunfire, there was panic and chaos as 38,000 people tried to leave the stadium.

I feel like we have accepted mass shootings as the new normal, there is no will to change anything. As a Brit my first thought at a popping sound would be a firecracker not a gun.
It really saddens me that real or perceived danger is what we have chosen to accept.

I will also bet that nothing will change in Florida.

There were 3 shootings at US HS games this past Friday night!

The cynical side of me wonders why all the major news outlets and papers don’t have a permanent column on their front page entitled “Today’s Mass Shootings” or something like that.

This has become normal here because we refuse to acknowledge the elephant in the room.

The cynical side of me wonders why College Confidential doesn’t have a pinned thread called that, @Massmomm.

There is no possible solution.

There ARE possible solutions. Even if it’s many small ones that just chip away at it, those are lives saved.

I’m in Australia- a place where they figured out how to pretty effectively deal with this after just one mass shooting.

This shooting was on the news here this morning. Unlike with us, they don’t pretend that this is anything other than completely routine.

This has sent ripples of horror and shock through the gaming community. We’re not used to IRL violence.

Another day, another mass shooting. Sigh.

@romanigypsyeyes, have a fabulous time in Oz!

Son works on a different video game with Twitch. It is his career.
He has been to different states to set up and help direct the tournaments.
I was so relieved when H said that was not his game.
That said, we have not had a response from him today asking how about him
and if he lost any friends. Trusting DIL to have let us know if anything bad happened.

It is a hard question to come up with an effective and legal strategy. How do we keep weapons out of the hands of those that are willing to commit criminal acts? Taking a gun or knife or hammer away from me is not the answer, as I have no desire to commit criminal acts with those weapons.

Really not a hard question. 300 other countries have managed to solve it.
