Another deadly earthquake hits Mexico

Honestly, what on earth is going on? I’ve never seen this many natural disasters over such a short period of time in a relatively condensed space.

The images coming out are devastating.

I’ve been watching some coverage. So sad. I can’t imagine the feeling of those living in the area and now dreading aftershocks or additional activity.

This is sad and scary.

Mexico City is one of the worst places it can strike too. It’s not on any kind of stable foundation. Mexico City is literally built on a lake.

Would this be considered an aftershock? That went on for weeks last year in Italy.

It sounds like it’s too far away to be an aftershock of the earlier earthquake.

I can’t seem to find the direct AP article for some reason, but no it’s not an aftershock.

I texted my nephew as he lives in Mexico City; he is fine as he was traveling for work in Bogata. He did not say that there was any issue near his apartment; don’t know if he just didn’t want to chat, or if everything in his area was truly fine.

@snowball it was mostly southern Mexico City that was hit. Bogota is north/northeast of the city by a decent bit so it’s entirely possible that everything is fine there.

@romanigypsyeyes He lives in Mexico City, but was out of town when the earthquake hit. I just don’t know if there is any damage to his apartment or office, or how his friends are. I am just glad that he answered my text as he had not contacted his father to let him know he was ok.

I heard back from people I used to know and they are all ok. I think the highest I ever experienced was a 5 and our ceilings quacked. I used to be able to detect when there was going to be an earthquake few minutes prior because I would feel nauseous.

Maybe all the natural disasters we have experienced lately are due to the eclipse.

Earthquakes are very scary and then it can take considerable time to dig out and also confirm structural integrity.

The hurricanes continue to be very scary too.

I hope this is over for Mexico. I keep thinking of Italy, only last year, hit in August and then October and then January. Yikes.

We had a earthquake near DC a few years ago. For a second I thought a helicopter was flying over the building and then the ceiling fan started shaking violently and rotating. I had no clue what had happened till after the fact when it was reported in the news. The Washington monument was damaged as a result of it.

The first earthquake I ever experienced was when I was taking a shower at my host family’s house in Costa Rica.

I freaked out because the earth is not supposed to move! It was a very, very minor one and my host family had a good chuckle at my expense.

My friend who experienced the earthquake by Oaxaca also was in this one. Both times he’s been fine but he’s a bit shaken by having two major earthquakes in such a short time.

I’m afraid the death toll for this one is going to go up for a good week or two. :frowning:

@raclut My daughter was working in DC during the 2011 earthquake. We were actually chatting on gchat, when she tells me the lights are shaking. Then she said she has to leave there is an earthquake! Within moments she is back online; she had grabbed her computer and still had wifi; she wanted me to know she was ok.

I just read that yesterday was the 32nd anniversary of one of Mexico’s grimmest days - the anniversary of an earthquake that killed 10,000 people. What a tragic coincidence. :frowning:

We were living in Corpus Christi at that time, and a woman called into the radio station there and said her pool water was sloshing out, and she wondered if anyone knew what was going on. Then the report came in about the earthquake in Mexico City.

So sad. Thinking of the people there and those impacted by the storms.

I am so sad for Mexico City and its neighboring towns. DH and I were planning to visit a former student of mine in Puebla this spring break. We will have to delay that trip. All of these natural disasters happening at the same time is so overwhelming. Prayers for everyone involved.

Seeing and hearing about the rescue efforts - of people searching through the rubble and a whistle blowing to quiet people when they need to listen for life…it’s tearing me apart. :frowning:
