DD will be attending a wedding this weekend in VA. We are from the NE and have been hearing that our weddings are more formal so she is torn as to which dress to wear. Her normal formal dresses seem too dressy. Mostly black either lacy or sequin etc.
The event starts with a BBQ followed by the ceremony followed by a reception. There will be no changing, so the dress has to span all three events.
She is thinking of a structured linen straight cut dress that is sleeveless. It is light pink on top, and dark pink on the bottom. and lands several inches above the knee. The other choice is a silky floral sun dress also in the pink family. It has a high neckline, hits just at the knee and is sleeveless. It is more flowing and loose fitting.
That do you think?
I vote for the sun dress because it sounds more like an outdoor type dress. It also sounds Southern! I presume the BBQ is outdoors?
I just can’t get over the BBQ before the ceremony! Hope they are passing out bibs and there are no “burps” at the ceremony!
(sounds delicious, but unusual to me BEFORE the ceremony!)
Both of these choices sound like they need some sort of a wrap or a cardigan to go with them. I would go with the sundress and some sort of a wrap.
It seems odd to me. I thought they meant it was a BBQ, they would take a break for the ceremony then go back to the BBQ party. I am going to get her to confirm that she is understanding the event fully.
Is the BBQ a welcome event the evening before?
I hope not, if it is they are missing it right now haha. I am still waiting on clarification of the whole event though. It is a friend of her BF, so she is the +1. That explains why she is sort of in the dark on the whole thing.
ETA: oops, wouldn’t be missing anything right now, I was a day off. Wedding is Saturday.
Maybe the venue/officiant schedule pushed that back, so they needed to have food first.
There are other things at a BBQ than BBQ. ( at least on west coast)
I would go with the sundress too, but also would bring a top or something that I could stash in my bag if it got dirty.
Where in Virginia is this wedding? This Saturday, the high temp in Alexandria Isnt supposed to top 60.
I believe around Richmond
Well…according to weather.com…Friday it’s supposed to be about 80. Saturday…high in the very low sixties. Sunday, high in the sixties.
I think your daughter should check a weather forecast and take a couple of options with her. I’m thinking…unless she is sure it’s going to be warm, a sundress might not be the best choice.
Is this event outdoors?
You could do a shrug with a sundress and be layered.
Good point about checking the weather. I will remind her to take something to go over the dress.
I love linen, but a structured linen dress sounds too formal for a BBQ, and it will be wrinkled after the first event unless she never sits down.
I vote for the floral, looser dress with a pretty wrap.
I think either sounds fine. They sound like they are about the same level of formality to me.
OK, I may not (definitely ) have not described the first dress very well. It is more of a shift dress, and not really linen, more cotton. I guess I was trying to describe not silky or shiny. I will try to find a picture of something at least similar.
ETA: This is similar dress, same feel. For her dress the bottom band color is like the top of this one, and the top band on hers is a lighter shade of pink. Not the exact dress, but very close.
that dress is pretty. Still, bring a sweater/wrap.
Newest piece of info… attire listed as “semi formal or dressy casual”. I am still not sure about where the BBQ fits into the whole thing. But it looks like an outdoor ceremony with an indoor reception following. I still think her normal wedding/NYE attire would be too dressy.
I agree that normal NYC dressy wedding wear would be too dressy. The shift dress would be perfect if paired with the right wrap and not-too-casual wedges and some jewelry.
Wear the shift dress with a nice wrap, and nice jewelry. She will be fine.
