D called today and asked for some advice. I was not sure of the answer. I have been out of the corporate world for 20 yrs and have not worn a suit since.
D has purchased the suit. She has an event coming up that will include lunch with recruiters. She asked if you remove your suit jacket during lunch. She would like to wear under her black suit a colored top that happens to be sleeveless. If she needs to remove the coat she would wear another blouse. Her two long sleeved blouses are white or the classic blue. She feels if she wears white or blue with a black suit she will look like everyone else.

No need to remove the coat unless she is warm. At least in my opinion…

In general, unless she is broiling in the suit I would keep the jacket on. (Assuming they aren’t going out for ribs or something like that). Even if the guys shed their jackets, it is not unusual for the women to keep them on. Remember the guys have long sleeves and ties on. Women may have someone much lighter on under the jacket these days (cami, sleeveless, etc.).

She should plan on keeping her jacket on. I can probably count on one hand the number of times I’ve taken off my suit jacket while at work in the last 25 years. It’s pretty atypical to take off the suit jacket.

(And I work in Houston – so if anyone would take off jackets because of heat, it should be here!)

thanks. I will pass it along. She will be very happy.
