Another Droid vs. iPhone query

Instead of typing a text message, I can push a little “speak now” button and the phone listens to my voice and transcribes my speech into words.

I don’t know what it is with my voice, but voice recognition programs don’t register it.When I get computer customer service it keeps asking me to repeat it & then hangs up after simpering “sorry your’e having trouble”.
I don’t speak quietly I try to speak as clearly as I can but it still rarely works.

:p

EK-I had this problem when I first got my Incredible because I assumed it needed me to speak slowly and loudly. Eventually I tried just speaking like I normally would…BAM. It has worked perfectly ever since.

curmudgeon has an iPhone? And knows how to use it?

If I know one of those cutesy country phrases for registering shock and awe, I’d be inserting it here!

Got an LG Vortex (Android) last month and love it, way more than my previous iPhone or BlackBerry. It’s also a bit smaller than many androids, very good hand-feel too.

Any idea how I can fix /reset the proximity sensor on my Droid X? I often hit the Mute button or the End Call button, so it’s not always the number keypad per se. (Calreader, sorry to jump in).

Never fear. My abilities to use it are that of an infant. I had the fella at AT&T look at our bill. My kid had used 6.5 times as much “data” as I had and 90 times as many text messages. The whole store was chuckling at the old dude.

No problem, curmudgeon. I gave up my data plan two years ago as unnecessary since I’m basically tethered to my laptop when at home and don’t feel the need on the road.

And no one in my family texts.

Which is why my only “contribution” to this thread are these distracting asides.

end of hijack

Wow, I’ve got to try that. Then, I might not be so mad at my H for “surprising” me by replacing my Blackberry with an Incredible!

mom111, I suggest you call Verizon tech support; I have had several questions with my Droid X (which I LOVE) and the tech people are tremendously helpful.

As far as the comment about the X being too big–that’s why I got it, so these 60 year old eyes can see that huge screen as well as possible!

* far as the comment about the X being too big–that’s why I got it, so these 60 year old eyes can see that huge screen as well as possible!*

Thats pretty much why I am considering an iphone. The expand/collapse option on the screen works really well.

Please feel free to hijack - I’m learning a lot from all the asides.

Orchestramom, what do you love about the Vortex? Especially in comparison to the iPhone? I’m not influenced by Blackberry comparisons; H has one and I find it very hard to use whenever he hands it to me for navigation in the car.

^^ size and ergonomics are a big plus…it just fits in my hand sooo much better. Price couldn’t be beat for an “experiment”. The Vortex is an entry level Android-phone and with the special promotion, was free (and I was due for an upgrade anyway).

I’m not really a techie at all, so I’m not the one to compare and contrast the relative technical merits of iPhone vs. Android…but I must confess I’ve never really warmed to Apple products (shocking I know ! and I had heard many good things about the Android platform.

(Blackberry – blech – soooo 20th century, dontcha think? )

My sentiments exactly. I have never found them intuitive. I have the worst time remembering how to turn off my ^&()%! nano.

Bumping this thread up. Any new opinions now that the new iPhone is out?

I have Verizon and am finally ready to upgrade to a smartphone. S has a Droid and loves it, but he uses an HP computer. I have a Mac laptop, so with Apple introducing a bunch of Cloud stuff, I feel like I should get an iPhone so everything will sync. But is that really a big deal or could I sync email, etc with a Droid? My work email is a Gmail account, personal email is comcast.

Meanwhile D also wants a smartphone, but she and I are both aghast at the cost ($200 for an iPhone or Droid WITH a 2 year plan). She has an iPod touch that she uses, and thinks she’d be just as happy to continue using that and get a Blackberry phone to get email.

Thoughts?

The big cost is the data plan - once you’re past that, they’re all the same :-).

For email, if the school uses Exchange, or for personal email, it took about 2 minutes to connect my daughter’s Windows 7 Phone to the school Exchange server and a minute to Gmail, etc.

I use both Androids and iPhones for work (software developer) and in all honesty I hate Android, and am just OK with the iPhone.

Virgin Mobile has a $25/month plan - covers voice, text, data.

They have the Motorola Triumph coming out in three weeks and it’s Android and that’s what I am planning on.

Bookmarked

Quote:“could I sync email, etc with a Droid? My work email is a Gmail account, personal email is comcast.”
Droid is a Google phone, so it can sync with any computer as long as you have a google account. I have a Droid Incredible and I can open my gmail at the phone with one simple touch. I can also access my time runner email. Another good thing about Droid is that you can sync Google calendar easily. With iPhone I think you have to use MobileMe to sync calendar.

with iphone you can sync your calendar everytime you sync your phone.
there is also this app for google apps.

despite the reviews, I haven’t had a problem

D1 was all set to replace her blackberry with an iphone. After research, she got a droid. She is happy with it. (D2, rising senior in college, has an iphone)

She is tech savy, was an IT (basically CS) minor and is now a derivative trader in NYC. So she always goes for what she believes is best tech wise.

Her job also gives her a cell phone. Currently it is a blackberry. She said they are planning to give them new phones. It will be interesting to see what phone they choose.
