Is secrecy necessary?

Many people consider secrecy shady and destructive. However, secrecy is actually a necessary part of a functional society. A few examples of why secrecy is important are the book ‘1984’, and the relationship between the government and the public.

In the book 1984 the government knows almost absolutely everything about almost all of its citizens. It is constantly spying on its people. The citizens have no way to keep things to themselves. As a result the people lose their sense of individuality and become simply a mass of nearly identical people. If the government had allowed the people to maintain their secrets and live their lives unsupervised, the people would not have blended together to the point of being nearly clones of each other. The reason for this is that ones secrets and private, personal knowledge and feelings determine ones identity, so with no secrets, there is only one uniform identity.

Another example of the importance of secrecy is the relationship between the government and the public. One such relationship is the relationship between the current United States government and its people. The government is at war with terrorism. If the government had a plan to capture a group of terrorists, and they revealed that plan to a reporter, the reporter would certainly inform the public. If that happened, the targeted terrorists would most likely hear of the planned strike, and go into hiding, and the government would have accomplished nothing but angering a group of terrorists. But what other choice does the government have? Does it simply allow the terror to continue without response? No, they operate in secret when it is necessary and beneficial to the country. Without a certain degree of secrecy the government could accomplish very little.

In conclusion, secrecy is a necessity in many aspects of life, namely the government, as demonstrated by the book 1984, and also the relationship between the government and the public. Without secrecy, the world would be made up of very similar people, being governed by an ineffective government.

Dont spare my feelings  Feed back is appreciated with a score…Thanks for your responses!

Intro: fine, but generic

Body 1: Kind of a weak argument. Elaborate on this. Make the connection between secrecy and individuality.

Body 2: This is not good because you’re just speculating. We need hard evidence for us to believe you! Also, don’t talk about touchy topics like the War on Iraq.

I’d give it an 8, but I’m really tired now. If I were more active and awake I’d probably give it a 7.
