Another grammar question! Help appreciated

“The contrast between my experience in Mexican and Australian schools ___ like night and day.”

Should it be “was like” or “is like” if the author went to a Mexican school until he was 6, and then moved to Australia and has been there ever since?

Does anybody know the answer? :[

If the author is still a student in Australia, the present tense should be used. If the author is, however, no longer a student, either the simple present or simple past tense can be used.

In my opinion, the answer is “was” since the author is comparing the schools he went in the past.
