Not to sound flippant, but why aren’t the advocacy groups, LULAC, MALEDF and LaRaza doing more to condemn these incidents and educate illegal latino immigrants that these events are hurting the cause of legalization? The groups should promote a MADD-type of campaign because the Raleigh NC event (undocumented alien, no driver’s license, blood alcohol of 0.12) and vehicular fatalities by other undocumented residents, like the recently notorious Virginia Beach case, adds resentment and alarm to the illegal immigration debate.

I was wondering about that too. If the % of traffic fatalities caused by illegal aliens is more or less than what you’d expect from their presence in the general population.

I suspect you’re right, mm. If you believe what people say, illegals make up anywhere from 5-10% of the US population, and if they were causing 5-10% of the traffic fatalities, we’d have heard about it long before now.

Unfortunately, even ONE case like this is especially tragic because the person had no legal right to be where he was–and but for that illegal act, the people whose lives they took would still be living.

Speaking only for myself, if it were my relative killed by a drunk driver, I don’t think knowing the driver was a citizen or legal resident would be much consolation.

Speaking only for myself, the illegal aspect of the citizenship would be like a knife turning and twisting in the most raw of wounds–because the event should NEVER have had an opportunity to occur.

I happened upon some illegals who had flipped a minivan while driving under the influence. The accident had just happened. The other drivers and I helped them from the truck and directed traffic around the site until the FD and PD arrived. I wished that I could speak Spanish well enough to ask them why they weren’t keeping an extremely low profile.

damn illegals! they cause all the problems in our world! first traffic accidents, next global warming and world hunger! here’s to building a 50ft. brick wall around the border!!!

LOL. my god! you people are so bitter…chill out!

The family of at least one of the Virginia Beach victims did not much appreciate Bill O’Reilly crying louder than the bereaved about what happened.

"here’s to building a 50ft. brick wall around the border!!!

I hear there’s lots of extra bricks in Berlin…(But I want a really, really big one! at least 13 stories tall, though it will drain all the so-called legal construction workers out of the rest of the country, but that shouldn’t be any prob…)

That is so not the case here. Most of them have cars with NC plates and they are among the most aggressive drivers and think it’s hilarious to have accidents because they don’t have insurance and it’s a sanctuary city so nothing happens to them.

^This is definitely NOT my experience living in Houston, Texas probably one of the largest of sanctuary cities. I’ve never seen ‘hilarious’ enter the equation when Hispanic immigrants (legal or not) have accidents or a traffic incident. Mommusic makes the most practical description of what truly goes on.

I’m actually more worried during the summer months when all the teenage drivers are on the road and every night becomes party night…than I am about an illegal behind the wheel. In fact, reminds me…just witnessed an accident between a teenage driver and a guy driving a landscaping truck. Two teenagers in a brand new Mercedes SUV pulled out illegally in front of the landscaper and were broad-sided. All sorts of commotion. Both girls’ fathers arrive and are furious (at their girls); the driver of the landscaping truck is up against the truck while the cops search his vehicle. Big mess…huge delay.

Or please…families…keep your elderly off the road if their driving skills have deteriorated. My brother’s youngest was killed by a senior driver who drove off the road into the grass and group of kids. My nephew had just finished first grade. The driver fled and his relatives actually kept his car hidden for 9 months until someone with a guilty conscience finally called the police. I suppose they thought they were protecting him.

A few years ago the LA area was inundated with road rage incidents…most caused by red-neck, bear drinkin’, NRA bumper-sticker sporting, fine upstanding Americans. I would say we have a high percentage of legal and illegal immigrants here and there is no data to support that they cause a higher percentage of the accidents or are involved with road rage. I am more concerned about the cars they drive, which are usually in disrepair and spewing smog…

IDmom, my dear friend lives in Houston and says that many of the illegals there are families. That’s not so much the case here. Most here are young, single men. I suspect it’s a totally different situation.
