Another Person Having a Problem with Course Reccomendations and Planning

Hello all, before I begin to ask for your help I want to thank you for any assistance you could give involving this issue. I have quite a bit of information and a scary predicament and I was hoping to get some help before I used e-advising.

I’m a freshman in ERC penciled in as a Literature/Prewriting Major and received these recommended courses.

MMW1
LD Lang For Major (I’m told to contact the Lit Department for the course recommendation)
Math (I can either take Math 4C or Math10A according to MPT scores)
Chem (I can take either Chem 4 or Chem6A)

Now I have a few issues and with them a number of questions.

First as a Lit Major, I am being recommended to contact the Literature department or check its website for the course I should be taking. I’ve been on the site and have looked at the courses, but I still don’t understand what I should be taking. What does LD Lang for Major even mean?

Another thing is that I’m actually thinking of switching my major to one that will allow me to become a Pharmacist. I was wondering what major I should switch to if I do go through with the Pharmacy idea. I am also wondering what math and chem I should take if I do decide to switch my major. I have no credits in either except a 5 on the AP Bio exam that would have exempted me from my Natural Sciences at ERC, but I’m really interested in pharmacy and know that a switch to a science major would require quite a bit more science classes.

Science and English have always been my strong points and my passions so its been an issue over my choice of major. I chose Pre-writing as my major, but Pharmacy is very difficult to ignore at such a renown school as UCSD.

To sum it up my questions are:

  1. As a current Lit/Prewriting Major, what course should I consider taking my first year under the LD Lang for Major because I still do not understand the system as stated by the Lit department website?
  2. I’m interested in Pharmacy as well, so what major should I switch to if I do choose to take the medical route instead?
3: With the changed major from 2, what math should I take from either 4C or 10A, and what chem should I choose if I didn’t have a strong chemistry class in high school to begin with?
  3. Finally, I have considered the differences in schedules if I do decide to change to a science major and have been hit with a schedule problem.
    If I take:
    MMW1
    Math 4C
    Chem 4
Lang to fulfill GE (Which doesn’t bring about an overlapping problem)

My classes overlap! Are there any other alternate schedules I can take that will be able to fulfill my prerequisites without overlapping with MMW1 for example?

I know this is a lot of information and it is a bit confusing, but I’m practically confused myself. If anyone can help or recommend anything I will be very grateful. I’m prone to panic and disorient myself, so please forgive me if I have made a very foolish point at any time above. I’m really sorry for taking up your times.

Please help as soon as possible, I will be posting my concerns through E-advising as well, but I want more assistance on the problem at hand.

Sorry I am an incoming freshman too so I can’t answer all your questions, but I’m aiming for the pharmacy road too! I’m majoring in Biochemistry/chemistry. You can refer to collegeboard for other major ideas: Pharmacists

HOWEVER, all the biological majors at UCSD are impacted, so you may have trouble switching majors… I don’t know much on that subject though, I just recall my orientation leader talking about the difficulty of getting into an impacted major ):

Are you serious? I haven’t been to orientation yet and I wasn’t aware that those are impacted majors. Shoot, I hope there’s someone who can give more info about this. This is what I get for being indecisive.

Wait, but what if you were undecided, then wouldn’t that be difficult to get into a biological major as well?

I’m really worried now.

um, pharmacy has a lot more overlap with chemistry than it does with biology. check this out: [UCSD | Department of Chemistry&Biochemistry – Administration](http://www-chem.ucsd.edu/academic/Ugrad/7yr.pharmchem.bs.pdf)

you can switch to pharmaceutical chem major…it’s not impacted. Or you could switch to biochem/chem or any other chem major. You could also stay a lit major and just take all the prereqs for pharm school but obviously that’s a lot more work.

If you want to apply for an impacted major, then you should take all the required major courses your first year. So if you want to be a bio major then take chem 6 series and not 4 etc

I see. I thank you for all your help. I apologize for saying “biological” I meant biochemical which shavingcream66 covered well. If I do switch to biochem or pharmaceutical chem, am I required to take the same classes within the first two years as an impacted major as is required to be able to take the specialized route as astrina noted?

I might be getting this confused but the impacted major is what the document astrina posted is referring to, yes?

I’m not qualified for the Math20 series at all and I can’t take Chem6A without taking at least Math10A.

google “impacted majors ucsd” - the link i posted is a special program that the chemistry department offers so you can get two degrees in a shorter amount of time.

and yeah, 10A may be a prerequisite for 6A but it’s all a lie. you don’t need anything beyond strong algebra skills to excel at the math in the chem 6 series.

Ok, I understand now. I apologize again. I have a lot of things to think about.
