This board was so helpful when I started this quest, so i will ask for advice once again:

Considering 2 tv’s both Sony, both 1080p, 120 Hz

one is a 55" LCD, the other is a 46" LED

Price is about the same

Given the size of my room, 46 would be the low end of acceptable size, 55 would be better

Am considering image size vs. image quality vs. energy use, brightness, etc.

Given that the most common complaint about tv’s is that “I should have bought bigger”, is the LED picture that much better to justify a smaller size?

We have an LG LED and we got the smaller size. I do wish we had a slightly bigger one…but I don’t really watch TV that much. Our room could easily have take a 55 inch TV but we didn’t want a TV table that large…and we didn’t want anything that large mounted on the wall. Thus the smaller choice.

My husband says the LED pic is MUCH better (in his opinion) than the LCD.

go for the LED. I just bought a smaller Samsung 23" LED TV/ Monitor to replace my older 23" LCD Samsung. The picture quality on the LED is much better.

Go for the bigger size for sure. However, try to make it either a plasma or an LED-LCD. You may be able to get a 55" plasma for less than the LCD but end up with a superior picture. You can also consider throwing a bit more money at it for the LED-LCD vs the non-LED-LCD.

You almost certainly won’t be satisfied with the smaller sized TV and will end up with buyer’s remorse every time you look at it.

We have a Samsung 55" LED-LCD that’s got a superb picture. I agree with notrichenough - while Sonys are excellent TVs, you don’t have to spend that much to get a really good picture. Definitely go bigger.

We’ve owned an excellent 46" Samsung for a couple years. At the time the decision was “get the 46” that’s perfect for our room … or go for the cheaper 42" model. What’s difficult to anticipate is how your family will adjust to the picture size over time. While the 46" is still theoretically “perfect for the room” family members uniformly agree that the “perfectly sized” TV could be bigger.

^^ I don’t know about the LG plasma but a friend recently bought an LG LED-LCD and it has a great picture - better than the TVs around it. I bought an LG blu-ray DVD player and it works fine as well. If the picture looks good on the LG plasma then go for it.
