Another question...

For an audition, I need to read a portion from a CHEESY sci-fi or horror novel. The portion has to be OVER-THE-TOP dramatic or psuedo-suspensful. Well… I’ve been looking for over a week and I can’t find a good book that works! Any suggestions??

Jen

Planet of the Apes? The movie was based on a book, I am told. Hard to get cheesier than that.

For horror, anything by Dean Koontz should work. He’s pretty terrible.

Sci fi is a lot more interesting, potentially. Do you get to read a lot of different characters? In that case, you might want to go with something that has a lot of action and aliens and the like. Something from the Uplift series might be pretty good, since it has a bunch of odd aliens plus earth animals like dolphins and apes that have been uplifted to human-like intelligence. I also recall that there’s a lot of dialogue.

CHEESY brings to mind “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes”, “Creature of the Black Lagoon”…not sure if they are available in book form. You can’t get any cheesier than the “Goosebumps” series by R.L. Stine if the reading level doesn’t matter.

I just thought of a good, cheesy sci-fi series: the John Carter of Mars series by Edgar Rice Burroughs! Have fun.

Plan 9 From Outer Space is probably the worst (cheesy) sci-fi movie you’ll ever see. It’s hysterical!

I know Star Trek used to have books. There has got to be some pretyy cheesy stuff in their, yet at the sametime oddly classic.

Yeah, I thought about Star Trek and Star Wars, both, but I think that’s risky beause we all have such strong associations with particular actors in those roles.

So Jen-
I am wondering what it is you are auditioning for with an over-the -top science fiction? I was a real sci-fi nerd as a high schooler, but mostly the political stuff. So I am intrigued about what this is for, if you can say.

I’m auditioning for Rocky Horror Picture Show :)
