On Dec. 31 I got a letter telling me that I got the Distinguished Scholars Scholarship at Tulane. I also applied for the Dean’s scholarship. Today I got another letter telling me that I got the Distinguised Scholars award. Does this mean that I didn’t get the Deans scholarship?

I received the same letters. It says in the letter you received today that if you get a different Tulane scholarship that is more, it will replace this one.

Yea I got the Distinguished Scholars too…I was kind of surprised when I opened the envelope becuase the letter was nothing special…printed on cheap paper…but hey it’s all good

yup i got it too, what is up wit tulane they keep sending me stuff… its just my super safety

Sempitern, don’t worry, if admissions frequents these threads, you may not be getting anything else.

hah lol tulane is busy with mardi gras… i hear they suspend classes for 2 days … hmm that sort of party school is not my place to be, if it werent for their personal app, i wouldnt have applied

yes, and since i am in already i’m not afraid of speaking the truth

sempitern, I’m afraid you won’t like Rice either. It’s a “party school” also.

I also got the letter, I was also wondering why they printed the scholarship on cheap letter. Don’t you think a 22k scholarship is worth the extra 20 cents to print on higher quality paper?

eh, perhaps everyone accepted via the “personalized app” got it and we are a dime a dozen.

Sempitern, not all students at Tulane are hard core partiers, just as the citizens of greater New Orleans don’t all live in bars 24/7. Tabby is right. Rice is known for their campus keggers. During our visit to Rice, the university approved keggers were talked about openly and were main features of the social life that was being sold. Every school has parties and hard core partiers. Every school also has students that are able to abstain or find a balance. Tulane is full of such students. Too bad folks assume that life in NO is what they see on the ten o’clock news during Mardi Gras.

Perhaps Tulane is able to offer the extra $4,000 on the DSA this year because they don’t print eveything on 20 lb. vellum. (said with a big smile!)

the big difference between rice and tulane is that rice is much better, with better academics and the rice/baylor program.

there is a big difference , and I like rice more. I would not have applied to tulane if they had not sent me the personal app. I like Rice MUCH better

As you will learn as you grow older sempitren555, “better” is a relative term. Rice may indeed be “better” for some (including you), but neither Rice, Tulane, or any other school is “best” for all.

If, as the tone of your posts seem to suggest, Tulane is “beneath” you, you should just move on, put their letters in the round file, and hope that you get admitted elsewhere.

And, while I am on my soap box, why all this complaining about what kind of paper the scholarship award is printed on? Let’s be honest here. Tulane is in the process of trying to attract a more distinguished student body, and not to take anything away from anyone who has recieved a DSA, but face it, Tulane is offereing a lot of these scholarships. They know that only a percentage of students will accept admission and the scholarship, and therefore putting a lot of $$$ into pomp and circumstance is just plain wasteful. This is the reality. You students want prestige, the colleges want rankings, and so the game goes on.

If you want a shiny certificate, apply for the more elusive scholarships like Dean’s. If you just want to be able to afford a very good private school, with a caring faculty, and students that seem to be enjoying their college experience, than be grateful for that thin piece of paper – I bet your parents are!

I’ve never been a poster here at CC, more an observer who checks out the distresses other students have aired throughout the college process. If I’ve had a question of quip, it’s been asked and answered. Today I made my own account for the first time so I may be an active member of the forums.

Sempitern, I’d suggest you get off the high horse. While Tulane may be your “super safety”, it is not for others who check this forum and your “prestige” inspired points are invalid to all but you. We are here to discuss possibilites about our futures and there is an optimistic aura about CC, not a degrading one.

And since you’re distracted by the “mediocrity” of Tulane, I have been accepted to ivies of higher RANK than Rice. It looks like I will not be attending them. Tulane, on the other hand…

Concerneddad, I like the concept of using the round file. It lets us get on with the rest of our lives. I think that most CC posters are able to discuss the schools they are accepted to but choose not to attend in a detached analytical way and are willing to discuss pros and cons of the schools. After all, they decided to appy there. I do feel in some cases, the posters hanging around to post on schools they clearly have rejected only to post condescending remarks are vicariously looking for an audience and are perhaps collecting acceptances. Perhaps the students at their schools are either unimpressed or weary of their remarks, particularly if they are putting down the schools their classmates have been accepted to in a similar way. As you say, “better” is a relative term. That’s why we are blessed in this country to have so many choices.

Hope you don’t mind my borrowing your soapbox, Concerneddad!

Ballboy232, welcome!

i never said tulane was a bad school, i just said that it wasnt a good school for me, and yes, there is an optimistic air about college acceptances… I look at the glass as half full not half empty

Sempitern, you’re going to make a GREAT politician! Here’s why! (also posted in Rice thread to ensure that you get this message!)

From Rice thread (Got the package Priority Mail Just now) : thanks, im nervous about rice because it will be the first good school i get in to(got in to tulane)
