Another Steubenville

Yet another chilling story about a girl’s alleged sexual assault at the hands of a high-school athlete…and the fallout that occurred afterwards. Really, really sad.

[Nightmare in Maryville: Teens’ sexual encounter ignites a firestorm against family - KansasCity.com](http://www.kansascity.com/2013/10/12/4549775/nightmare-in-maryville-teens-sexual.html)

Makes you want to take your family & hide out somewhere.

Ugh. I think this line disgusted me the most because it encompassed everything wrong with what happened. My heart breaks for the girl and her family. How did they get off with VIDEO CONFESSIONS?!

I really have no words but I am not surprised. For the life of me, I cannot fathom why anyone would want to live in a “small town” with an “insider/outside” feel. I live in a smallish town (<30k people) but the population is fluid with people coming and going so there’s no buddy-buddy system like this. I can’t imagine wanting to live somewhere like that. It’s just a recipe for disaster IMO.

This boy will rape again. And again. And again. And the worst part? He will never even think it’s rape and they will never pay for it. And he will raise his sons to think this is perfectly fine. (Changed because another article said the younger boy did spend time in juvey for this crime)

I wonder if this is the rapist’s grandfather: [Representative Rex Barnett](Representative Rex Barnett) if so, it’s even more terrifying given what committees he’s on.

Sickening. Sick sick sick.

ETA: Found this from another article about this (the comments section): http://www.yelp.com/biz/a-g-restaurant-maryville</a> it’s where he works. There was also a link to his fb but that’s been taken down (the facebook, not the link). I can’t even quote on here what was pulled from his facebook. Read the gawker comments about this case if you can stomach it.

Horrible, just disgusting. The boys will no doubt end up as politicians…

That reporter needs to learn to use the English language better. These rapists did not “have sex” with girls who either said no or were unconscious. You can’t “have sex” with someone who is unconscious. It takes two to have sex. “Rape” is the word we’re searching for here. Accuracy in language is important.

No consequences?? That Rice is as big an SOB as the others.

I agree, CF. The girls were 13 and 14, for God’s sake. And in a drunk stupor. It is sickening.

So the guy who filmed the “not crime” served time in jail for his part, but the guy being filmed couldn’t be prosecuted because there was no evidence? I get that there was a plea bargain for that, but I feel like the same evidence would be necessary and could be used for both cases. Suddenly the video is nowhere to be found?

It looks like people are trying to warn the students that he is attending University of Central Missouri via the schools facebook page.

Sometimes I could just despair.

And I’m sure these excuses for human beings would be happy to tell you all about their wonderful “values.”

The comments by the prosecutor are the worst:

In a later interview, [Prosector] Rice called it a case of “incorrigible teenagers” drinking alcohol and having sex. “They were doing what they wanted to do, and there weren’t any consequences. And it’s reprehensible. But is it criminal? No.”

Robert Sundell, who represented Barnett, echoed that sentiment: “Just because we don’t like the way teenagers act doesn’t necessarily make it a crime.”

Wow, in my town underage drinking alone is a crime.

The only reason it wasn’t a crime is because the boys involved were politically connected. If it was the other way around, the girls would have been ruined innocents and the boys castrated publically. Or maybe not … even now, after all these years, it’s always the girl’s fault. And being drunk exonerates boys while incriminating girls.
What a mess! I pray to God I’ve brought my Ss up better than to ever get involved in something like this.

I just don’t understand the mentality that Unconscious = Consent. Funny how the same rule doesn’t apply to unconscious guys. If a former flame passes out, and I steal his wallet and his car keys, take myself out to a fancy dinner using his credit card, then crash his car, nobody is going to say, “They were just doing what they wanted to do. He bought her dinner one time, so she is entitled to have him pay for her dinner. He lent her his car one time, so she is entitled to borrow it. If he didn’t want his car and his credit card stolen, he shouldn’t have gotten drunk. No crime here.”

What a terribly sad story, and this happened after the husband/father died in an accident with the family wanted to start a new chapter. I find it horrifying to think this blaming the victim still exists in 2013. These young men are steeped in misogyny, entitlement and connections. Despicable.

like your comparison CF

Interesting development …

[Anonymous targets Missouri town for refusing to prosecute man who confessed to having sex with 14-year-old and leaving her to die | The Raw Story](http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/10/14/anonymous-targets-missouri-town-for-refusing-to-prosecute-man-who-confessed-to-having-sex-with-14-year-old-and-leaving-her-to-die/)

Let’s just count up the crimes that this rapist confessed to. It’s a crime to give a 14-year-old enough alcohol so that she has a blood alcohol level of 0.13 seven hours later. It is of course a crime to rape her when she has passed out. It is a separate crime to film the rape. And it’s probably a crime to transport an unconscious victim out of a heated house and leave her unconscious outside in 30 degree weather.

That wasn’t enough for you, Marysville police department?

Just pointing out that one of the boys DID spend time in juvey for the crimes (the younger one). Sex with a minor might not have been illegal for the younger boy if it was indeed consensual and the state has Romeo & Juliet laws (big IF, don’t get me wrong).

Oh and I was right on who grandpa was. Go look at the committees he’s on. TERRIFYING.

I also absolutely agree with CF. They were not having sex. She was raped. RS got it wrong too.

The grandfather, Rex Barnett, is on the Criminal Law committee and two different Public Safety committees. A law and order politician. Until it’s his grandson who is committing the crimes. (OK, we don’t KNOW that a young man who confessed to rape was let off because his grandfather was on the state appropriations committee that appropriates money for police. It might be just a coincidence.)

Here’s more on Rex Barnett.

Nice. Politician, state trooper, church elder, and shriner all in one. Just a model citizen these days.

For some reason, the change.org petition is closed.
