Another Tax Question

My D made $530 last year in a work study job. We don’t live in this state. Does she need to file a state tax return for this amount?

Thank you so much. This is so confusing.

Unlikely but the best thing to do is grab the state’s income tax forms and booklets to see what the minimum threshold is for paying income taxes. It’s between $5,000 and $6,000 for the states that I checked for 2009. She might want to file a return if the state withheld money for taxes to get those withholdings back.

If the $530 was her total income for the year I doubt she’ll have to file. But BCEagle is right, you should check the state’s online information to be sure. If your D had other income the question becomes more complex.

Multistate income can be a real mess when other states do apportionment where your tax rate for one state is based on your total income from all states. I just had to do that for our son for two states and it was a PITA.

Thank you so much. We live in one state, she goes to school in another and worked last summer in a 3rd. I’ve filed in the state we live in and in the state where she worked last summer.

I’ve tried to figure out this without buying another state in TurboTax but I may have to do that. She only made a little over $2000 for the whole year.

Use Taxslayer.com (don’t put in your real info if you want to be anonymous). Run the numbers for one state, then delete that state and then run the numbers for the other state. I would guess that she has no tax liability anywhere but she may want to file to get withholdings back. My threshold is about $20 for whether to file or not.

Thank you SO much BCEagle91. Great information.
