Another theater shooting???

Our society is sick.

Just another day in America.

Yes, it is. I really dont want to hear. "for more people to own guns, or if someone had a gun to stop him,…

nevermind

People aren’t 100% reliable. Haven’t you heard? They malfunction. A lot has been written on it, both historical and scientific.

So, is anyone feeling a bit nervous going to the movies? I love them, but only go about 2 -3 times a year…but now I’m not so sure I won’t be a bit nervous. I think I foresee metal detectors in our future.

My son lives very close to there and thoughtfully texted me to let me know he was ok before I even knew it happened.

It’s sad that the perpetrator has schizophrenia and the gun was an airsoft.

I don’t feel nervous about going to the theater or much of anywhere. There are 300 million+ people in this country and the odds are much better that I’ll be hurt at home than by one of the handful of random violent acts.

What’s that old proverb? The definition of a fool is someone who keeps doing the same thing, and expecting different results? Americans are just learning to redefine safety because it’s easier than doing something significant and inconvenient. Court of public opinion is that these are random crazy people, these are disturbed people, these are random, rare acts. All of those, imho, are flawed concepts that nevertheless are popular, because they make us feel better.

Yes, I am less worry-free at a movie theatre. I worry about S2’s new living space, which is in the same building as an Army recruiting center. Maybe when tourism suffers, and people from other countries choose other places to visit, something will change.

Exactly. And OUR society seems to have more than its fair share of “unreliable” people “malfunctioning” by splaying innocents with bullets at presumably benign public locations like schools, universities, shopping malls, and movie theaters. It’s a sickness, for sure.

Interesting theory. How would you test it with data?

Thankfully, he had just a pellet gun, pepper spray, and a fairly dull hatchet. Had he wanted to kill people, he would have selected more dangerous tools. I wonder if his mental illness pushed him into this “suicide by cop” scenario, but not far enough to want to seriously harm others. (assuming he had some control of his thinking – schizophrenia, true psychosis, can take over a person’s mind entirely)

@prezbucky, I wouldn’t want to be around a homicidal individual with only a “dull hatchet!”

Thankfully more weren’t hurt.

Yes, it sounds as if he was seriously mentally ill. Perhaps not in control at all over his thinking processes.

Staying away from the movies because of these few events makes about as much sense, rationally, as does buying a lottery ticket.

I’m going to the movies tonight.

With or without a lottery ticket?

^^maybe use it to try to fool the ticket-takers… though likely a bit too colorful, made of the wrong type of paper, etc. hehe.

Or be like, “I didn’t buy a movie ticket, but um… you can have my lottery ticket.”

I wonder if this fellow tried to get a gun but was denied one due to his mental history. That would be welcome news.

@VeryHappy, good question. I wonder if that is the case.
