Another tipping question: furniture delivery people?

We ordered a sleep number bed in the sleep number store last week and paid for the shipping and delivery ($180 IIRC). Is it customary to tip the delivery people if you’ve already paid specifically for that service?

My instinct would be “no” but the internet seems to be divided. So- what say you? If yes, how much?

Note: I never have cash on me so I’ll have to make a special trip to the bank if I’m supposed to tip…

My vote is nope.

No.

My vote is also no. Not unless you have something that is really difficult or time consuming to set up. I think we tipped the furniture delivery people a $20 bill each, however, there was a lot of furniture, some of it was really heavy that they had to take down stairs. It was all pretty precarious, so though we wouldn’t usually tip for something like that, we did that time.

Whew, ok. I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t being a Scrooge or something  Thanks!

I didn’t tip the 2 men who delivered and set up our sleep number bed, nor did they appear to expect a tip.
BTW, they were great - booties covering their shoes, set everything up, cleaned up all of cardboard and plastic, told me how to use everything (we got the sleep iq as well as the adjustable base).

That’s what we’re getting, too, zeeba. Glad to hear that others’ experiences were good

Nope.

If you pay for delivery, I’d say no. When we had our new mattress/box spring delivered, there was no delivery charge. The delivery guys were very courteous, thorough (put down runners, vacuumed under bed before placing new mattress), and pleasant, so we tipped them. We had also just had a bad delivery experience a month earlier when our washer/dryer was delivered, so we were appreciative of how much better the mattress delivery was.

I don’t think you need to tip but if you want you could offer them bottled water or a soda.

No wonder delivery people are so excited by my small (~$10) tips! I didn’t realize that just wasn’t done anymore. Our house is not an easy delivery, so I feel like they earn a bonus.

I usually give them $20 and they split it. I feel like they earn it when carrying in and assembling big pieces of furniture!

I wouldn’t.

I always tip my delivery people. I get grocery delivered to my apartment and they charge a delivery fee. I usually tip them $5. For bigger stuff, like furniture, I would tip $20.

I err on the side of over tipping and have tipped each delivery person $10 to $15 at times. Hauling freezer in when there is snow on the ground, or when performing services that perhaps are not strictly within the terms of delivery.

It irritates the heck out of me that everyone expects tips. I do not tip people who are paid at least a minimum wage and simply do their job for their employer. A quick search shows that at least in my area, delivery people are paid at least $20+/hr by the company they work for. Sure, if the piece of furniture is huge… and they haul it up a flight of stairs and help with the assembly… and the delivery was “free.” But for a freakin’ mattress… For which op paid $180 bucks to be delivered: 2 guys for 1 hour, including the drive from the warehouse. Nope.

That’s my thought process, too, BB. I’m already paying for this so why am I tipping someone to do something I’ve already paid quite a bit for?

I grew up with trades people and they got paid, not tipped. I’m not sure why this is any different.

My room is on the first floor in an open, relatively small house. The weather is nice. This should be an extremely easy delivery.

(I too despise the tipping culture but I do tip very well for services that expect tips.)

Actually, $180 for the delivery? Holy crap, that is expensive. I have never paid such a high delivery fee, for anything, even large amounts of furniture. It’s always been free, or $60 max. $180 is highway robbery, absolutely NO WAY for one cent of a tip, that is crazy expensive!

$180 for delivery and set up. I got the modular base so I had to choose the home delivery and setup option.

I probably would’ve chosen it even if I did have the choice. Worth it when my body is so broken and Mr R is a pretty useless handyman :stuck_out_tongue:

You paid the company for the delivery, not the guys. I have no idea if that company is fair to its workers. I wouldn’t assume they get $20/hour. Maybe $10-15 for the heavy/delicate things and it may not be full time work.

I can’t tell a poor student she has to do this or that. Do what you feel is best for you. if you don’t tip, you won’t be the only one who doesn’t. But I gave two guys $20 to split when they brought and set up my refrigerator. Other times, for simpler work, maybe $5 each. These guys aren’t getting rich off my small envelope.
