I can’t resist nominating Whitman for all these lists (outdoor program, pedestrian friendly town, and vegetarian dining)–at the same time, i like it’s “hidden gem” unranked status because i think it helps preserve some things about it so perhaps it is best off the radar…I actually hate rankings but can never resist looking at them, what does that say about me?(please do not rank your responses…)

I’m quite surprised to see that Pitt isn’t on that list. The Outdoors Club is one of the largest clubs on Pitt’s campus and they go just about every weekend either rock climbing or backpacking and have other activites spread through the year which are popular with students and non-students alike. It’s funny to think that Pitt has a big outdoors population, but it is in the heart of the Appalachian Plateau with nothing but outdoors around it.

It’s hard to believe that the Evergreen State College isn’t a favorite of vegetarians. pause for research

Well, I’m surprised. They offer vegetarian dishes at every meal, but they don’t sound hardcore about it. They do offer this information on their dining service Webpage:

Washington, DC 3.5

"the America’s Most Literate Cities study ranks the 70 largest cities (population 250,000 and above) in the United States. This study focuses on six key indicators of literacy: newspaper circulation, number of bookstores, library resources, periodical publishing resources, educational attainment, and Internet resources.

The Dartmouth DOC (which is divided into a hiking/trailwork club, a canoeing club, and a climbing club) has trips offered almost every single day. They maintain a significant portion of the Appalacian Trail, rent out cabins, have a house off-campus, and (I believe) have some affiliation with Dartmouth’s skiway (but I’m not 100% sure). About a quarter of the student population is involved somehow, through trips, PE classes, clubs, etc. 90% of freshmen go on a DOC trip before orientation.
