Another travel thread - short getaway with friends

I’m sure we have addressed this in the past but not lately.

What are some go to spots for a 3-5 day getaway with female friends?

I’ve made many trips with my girlfriends to the Norwich Inn and Spa in CT for 2 night stays. It is easy, people can spend and do what they like (can get multiple treatments or go to the fitness center and take a yoga cĺass). Meals not included so we generally eat off site. Haven’t gone in a few years though.

Coming from where?

For me, it’s all about the company. I don’t care so much about the surroundings. I prefer a place that’s easy to get to. I would rather do a 3 hour drive to someplace easy than a 3 hour flight to someplace fancier.

A close friend and I have gone to NYC together twice. We were both living in the DC area at the time and took the bus up and back. In the past we did a mix of activities: carriage ride in Central Park, boat tour, 911 Memorial, food tour, etc.

NYC trip #3 is planned for early November. This time it’s a meetup as we have both moved and will be flying in. We have tickets for the Holiday show at Radio City and am waiting to see what the weather looks like for other activities. There is always a lot to do.

I did this with my nieces, and we just got the nicest Airbnb between us all, and spent the weekend there. But where geographically are you looking?

My group has done girls weekend to Vegas, DC, Chicago, and we have eastern shore of MD, NYC and Denver on the radar.

I think Charleston or Savannah would be great too.

I have a group of friends I’ve traveled with many times over the years. Our trips are always in this 3-5 day range. These have all involved air travel for us, coming from the Midwest:

NYC

Boston/Nantucket

Savannah

The Boulders Resort- Scottsdale

Stowe, VT

Charleston

Park City, UT

Monterey/Carmel

Siesta Key

We generally do some sightseeing, walking/hiking, always rent bikes. We usually rent a house, there are 7 of us.

If you’re in the northeast, I’d say go to Nantucket Island, which is 30 miles out to sea from Cape Cod. It takes an hour from Hyannis on the fast ferry or 2 hours on the car ferry.

Avoid the crowds and go during the shoulder season (April/May or September/October). Going at this time of year means rates for lodging are much lower than during the season. Almost everything is open.

There are tons of hiking/biking trails all over the island. You can walk one of the many beaches (even swim in late May or early September), shop downtown (no chain stores–just cute shops, art galleries, and two bookstores) and eat at some great restaurants. Night life–there’s a movie theater and live theater during the entire year. Cisco Brewery and the Chicken Box are fun places to visit and hear live music.

The Nantucket Whaling Museum and Nantucket Aquarium are both interesting places to visit and learn about the history of Nantucket. Go to Sconset and do the Bluff Walk and see the Sanktay Lighthouse. There a few hotels (White Elephant, The Nantucket Hotel, Coffin House, and Faraway Nantucket) and many private rentals (either through local real estate agents or Air B&B). It’s magical.

Nashville is the bachelorette capital. But there’s much more. I know some girls that did a weekend at Canyon Ranch in Tucson.

All 3 of my daughters did Nashville in college with girlfriends.

Well, I was coming here to say Nashville, but I see two people beat me to it. There’s really a lot right in the city, and there are easy day trips, such as the Jack Daniel’s Distillery. It’s a fun tour and tasting.

I’ve done Nashville twice, with cc moms from the HS class of 2010. We loved it so much we went back two years later. Only location that we’ve repeated. If interested, I have a city guide ds2 helped put together for his alma mater that I could send you.

Thanks for the ideas. All coming from different areas of Ca.

In the past we have gone to Memphis, Nashville, San Francisco (multiple times), NYC, Tahoe, Ojai, Palm Desert, various areas of Los Angeles and Orange County.

Did you say a time of year? Coming from CA I would say not too far away for a few days. Santa Fe??? Portland and Oregon coast?

How active is the group?

Well, depending on the time of year, let me recommend Austin and/or San Antonio.

Have you looked at the thread highlighting people’s state? I would love to go to Asheville.

We had planned to go last month, but when the hurricane hit last year we pivoted to Nashville as our friends had never been there. Fun time, per usual. We were planning months out so didn’t want to take a chance Asheville wouldn’t be up and running. I’ll get there at some point. My bff’s two grandkids live in NC so she’s always up for a trip there.

One friend mentioned Vancouver which is an option. Much will also depend on when everyone can go. If we go in the winter weather will be a factor.Pinning down dates that work for everyone is near impossible. Many spots one of us has already been. I love Asheville and I might suggest that. Also depends on how many planes everyone is willing to take.

I’m probably the least active. I don’t ski which takes out a winter mountain trip. I can hike but my knees aren’t great. We like music, exploring cities, window shopping with a little buying.

Oh, if y’all like music then I’ll double down on Nashville. They’ve got the Ryman, Grand Old Opry, the Bluebird Cafe (although tix are hard to get), the Basement East, Bridgestone Arena, War Memorial Auditorium and a ton of places on Broadway.

Last month the house band at Robert’s Western World was playing at 3 on a Friday. They are so good. Oh, and we also heard a great band at a place called Skinny Dennis. Turns out that it was Marty Stuart’s backing band.

Perhaps my favorite museum of all time – certainly in the music genre – is https://www.nmaam.org/

Obviously, there’s the Johnny Cash Museum and the Country Music Hall of Fame. So many litttle venues on the east side.

I’ve arranged two food tours with groups that were so fun. Great food and some exercise and history to boot.

I would totally recommend Vancouver. Such a fun city to walk around — amazing and fun architecture. The Aquabus takes you all over the city. You can bicycle Stanley park (takes around 2 hours ) and also visit the tall trees in Stanley Park. And even though the Capillano Suspension Bridge park is a tourist destination, it is wonderful and has sooo much more than the bridge. I loved Capillano and plan to go back. Also a nice botanical garden (not at Capillano).

I would recommend staying in the Coal Harbor area if you go. It’s an easy flight from CA.

Now, I am biased because I am trying to emigrate to Vancouver, but I have probably visited it more often than anywhere else where I don’t have family.

Lots of good suggestions. Adding Sedona to the list.
