Answer Q's about transferring to Yale?

Does anyone on this board know people or know of people who have successfully transferred to Yale, and what their story was? I really loved Yale, it was always my first choice, and I want to talk to someone who has gone through the process. Currently I’m enrolled at Cornell.

I haven’t personally gone through the process, but the people who I know who transferred to Yale were from other USNWR top 25 schools. That isn’t the only route–there is a CC poster this year who is transferring from a community college–but it seems to be the most common one.

Your best bet for transferring is to get AMAZING grades at Cornell and to articulate clearly why you want to transfer to Yale. You need specific, thoughtful reasons that don’t include higher prestige. What exactly does Yale offer that Cornell doesn’t? As you probably know, the transfer acceptance rate hangs around 4%, so don’t get your hopes too high.

All the transferees I knew found it easy to make friends and fit in quickly. I credit this to the residential college system and Yale’s non-cliquey student body.

Thanks for the info. I guess that’s all there is to know.

Hey AdmissionsA, you just made my day. I’m a little concerned about not being accepted as a full member of the fold in the same way someone that’s been at Yale their entire undergraduate experience is.

Maybe you can’t answer this, but is it considered a little strange to have transferred in? Do transfer students find themselves defending “trading up”? I’m from a community college so I’ll probably have less of a problem there, but I’m still curious.

OP, I agree, make sure to articulate (to yourself, first) why a transfer would benefit you, and why it would also benefit Yale. I don’t know whether the Ivy tag would mean a slight advantage or not, but I am guessing it is better if the two schools were very different - that way, it will seem less likely you were swapping habitat for name recognition alone.

frrrph–No one considers transferring odd. The general consensus is that Yale is the greatest place on earth. Why wouldn’t people want to transfer? I’m about to send you a PM about ways to integrate quickly into Yale. I would encourage all transfer students to check out the freshman bazaar where all the extracurricular groups have booths.
