Is it possible to double major in anthropology and creative writing at Columbia? Can I major in Anthropology and havea concentration in creative writing (not sure if that exists)? How are Anthropology/Creative Writing departments at CU?

yes it is possible to double major, though cr wr is a bit intensive in that you have to take courses in the appropriate order, and it is an apply for major (the dep’t might not let you major if they don’t think you’re a good fit). it doesn’t appear like there is a concentration version of cr wr. overall though - just start by taking courses, life will work itself out.

there really isn’t a weak dep’t at columbia (at least none that comes to mind), and anthro/writing are not exceptions. columbia basically developed modern anthropology as we know it, and the department has a huge tradition that attracts top flight profs and grad students (dirks, taussig and lomnitz are some of the biggest names in the field). it isn’t quite the powerhouse grad program it used to be, but ugrad attention is strong, and columbia has grants and monies for field work if you get that far.

the writing program is stellar. real powerhouses come out of the grad program (it is almost always in the same conversation with iowa and johns hopkins), and as a ugrad you’ll have access to the same faculty. without question one of columbia’s biggest strengths, especially in the arts.
