Anthropology (Human Osteology) BCPM?

Hey Guys,

I’m having a bit of hard time determining whether anthropology courses that deal with human anatomy will be considered as science for the BCPM GPA and also whether taking such a class for Pass/Fail will be frowned upon. Here are my exact questions:

Would an Anthropology course entitled “Human Osteology” count as a science for medical school’s BCPM (science) gpa? The description for the course is as follows:

A Lecture And Laboratory Course Focusing On The Characteristics Of The Human Skeleton And Its Use In Studies Of Functional Morphology, Paleodemography, And Paleopathology. Laboratories Familiarize Students With Skeletal Parts; Lectures Focus On The Nature Of Bone Tissue, Its Biomechanical Modification, Sex, Aging, And Interpretation Of Lesions.

My other question is… if the course counts as a science and if I do take the course for Pass/Fail will it it look bad to medical school adcoms?

How many courses can be taken Pass/Fail and still be OK for medical school admissions?

Thanks for all your help!

1) Hard to say. Generally courses under Anthro get counted under AO classes. You could try to list under BCMP and if AMCAS doesn’t agree, they’ll reclassify it for you and recalculate your GPA.

2) I’d doubt since it’s not a typical upper level BCMP course.

3) IMO, as few as possible otherwise the adcomm is going to wonder why you have so many. In the eyes of many adcomms, a P is equivalent to a C in a class since they will assume if you were confident you were going to do well in the class you’d have taken it for a grade.

Also, your college may have limits on the number of P/F class you’re allowed to count toward fulfilling graduation requirements.
